234858 2004-05-06 23:21:00 I've just dismantled/scrapped/recycled a v. old PC and I wondered if the power supply is useful for anything these days, either inside or outside a PC? tbacon_nz (865)
234859 2004-05-07 00:24:00 Always handy to have such things around but will struggle to keep up with todays spec's when periferals like printers, scanners, drives, etc are added. Could be handy for a mini form factor PC though. Will very much depend on the quality of the unit, some of the 4-500W rated PSU's are not up to a good quality 3-350W PSU's standard of suppy but, it isn't really my area (if anything is ;) )

234860 2004-05-07 02:12:00 You could make a cheap home entertainment centre. Have a look a This Post, (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) just add an old car radio and a couple of speakers, put it all in a recycled small tower case and Bob's your uncle.

Cheers

There would even be enough power to
spare for a small reading lamp

234861 2004-05-07 05:07:00 Yeah, Billy T, it looked like a great project - probably a bit outside my skillset. I can probably do assembly of stuff, but put a multimeter in my hands and I'd be getting nervous :D tbacon_nz (865)
234862 2004-05-07 05:10:00 If ita an AT psu then it may be worth firing away somewhere incase the need for one arises,if its atx i wouldn't bother, they are as common as muck and an under powered unit thats had most of the life worked out of it isn't worth installing back into any computer metla (154)
234863 2004-05-07 06:10:00 I'm pretty sure it will be an AT PSU - how can I tell by looking at it? tbacon_nz (865)
234864 2004-05-07 06:12:00 It will have 2 plugs to go into the motherboard, atx only has the one.

Should also say on the label.

234865 2004-05-07 06:31:00 Well low power psu's arent completely useless, the one in the computer im using right now is 235W and its currently feeding a cdrw a dvd 2 hard disks an fdd a usb1.1 hub, joystick, webcam, keyboard, mouse, 56k modem, LAN card and wLAN card, so they're still usable! 234866 2004-05-07 06:31:00 Hmmm, It doesn't say on the label. Are the motherboard plugs the ones that say P8 and P9? tbacon_nz (865)
234867 2004-05-08 23:29:00 Im not sure! My PSU only has p1 through p7, with p1 being the only one that connects to the mobo RobbyW (5226)
