234922 2004-05-06 20:27:00 Hi there, I will be getting win2000 in the next two days.
Firstly I would like to know is it possible to install it to another HDD (D:/ or even E:/(if i make a logical drive wateve))

Secondly, I like to be able to get into Win98se as well Win2000 so i need a booter or need my boot.ini to be edited or something (trying to sound smart from reading other posts :P)

So easy is it to go about all this. I am very capable of most things and will probably understand.

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mr Beef

234923 2004-05-06 21:31:00 Do you mean a physicaly seperate HDD or a partition? Either way win 2k will do the bussiness as far as sorting out the boot, 10 seconds is default to choose which OS IIRR . An already established partition or another HDD would be better but win 2k can adjust an existing one for you as long as you have ample disc space for it to manouver . You already have win98 running, which is good as win 98 wont do the job if it's the other way around, just boot to to the 2k installation CD and install over the top . When you get win 2k read the readme file on the CD which gives instructions on how to deploy with an existing OS (I think the Admin's network installation is more relevant) .

I successfully dual booted the two OS's (from the same partition) when I first got win 2k, for about a month without any problems then removed 98 because I saw no need for it once I had all my data and programmes where I wanted them . Some people report problems with the two together so your millage may differ .

I tweaked the boot . ini to load the default OS faster and you can also change which OS to boot by default, all in the readme . doc IIRR .

Back up first of course .

234924 2004-05-07 01:47:00 Install oldest first (Win98), it saves a lot of time fiddling round with your boot.ini and other stuff.

Win2000 should then autodetect the Win98 install, and you should end up with a dual boot menu at startup.

234925 2004-05-07 04:34:00 I have another hdd with just Misc files, I am curious as to how effective it would be to install onto that HDD MrBeef (342)
234926 2004-05-07 04:39:00 You can install it on any drive and it should be peachy :-)

Just take note of which HDD it is and the size it is so when the time comes to choose the installation location, you dont pick the wrong one :-)

Otherwise, its basically as easy as putting in the CD and rebooting ;-)

234927 2004-05-07 04:39:00 I dont want to really, delete win98 or upgrade i want win 2000 as a seperate os without losing my registry in win98, because Age of empires requires on the zone needs my registry settings to say it is installed, and i cant get the cd back again. MrBeef (342)
234928 2004-05-07 05:48:00 I am also curious with fat32 and ntfs, what do i gain with ntfs and dont i gain with fat32.

For the time being i might just use fat32 because i have all me music on D:/ (where i will install 2k)

Yes, this is the easiest way of doing it.... Parallel installation AKA Dual-booting!

> without losing my registry
> in win98, because Age of empires requires on the zone
Uh-oh.... Not likely, they both have seperate registries

> needs my registry settings to say it is installed,

You're either out of luck or need to go hunting for No-CD Fixes, but lets not go there....

Use FAT32, because Win98 cant read NTFS.
Its supposed to offer better security, but it doesnt seem to work as well as an Ext2/3 or ReiserFS File-System (Dont get your hopes up, its for Linux).

234930 2004-05-07 06:37:00 www.ranish.com is a good dual boot loader proggy. mark.p (383)
234931 2004-05-07 06:47:00 Ive used Xosl, found it great... I'd prefer Grub but you need a *nix OS first.

The default Win2k one should suffice though wouldnt you say?
