2004-05-06 06:30:00 | I'm having difficulty in internet speed, and not sure where the problm is occuring. I have rang tech support (Paradise my ISP) and had modem (56k) tweaked so all settings correct, updated virus software, run spybot and adaware, rung Telecom (they will send someount out for $81 if need be) and they say the line is fine. Yet when I send a 200k attachement to myself I get this error after a while: "Your POP3 server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you like to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond?" Server pop3.paradise.net.nz This has been happening for about 4 days now, and computer is very slow on the net - took me 45 mins to log on to this page! I've checked us.mcafee.com and it says my speed is 9.68 Kbps ( 1.21 KBps) , and friends are getting about 40 kbps. Basically what I'm asking is do you think I should get someone from Telecom out to check the line here? Or do you know of any other tests I can perform? Can I check if my modem is fine somehow? I've also vacuumed the inside of my PC, and defragged C drive, and removed all temp files etc - but it is still slow on the net! Hope you can help! Thanks, Simon

2004-05-06 10:03:00 | The original problem does sound like paradise, I have a cable modem with them but when away I use dial up - seems to connect fine off Saturn phone line (in Wellington) but not off TCNZ lines in Napier, Taupo etc...Steve, your friends problem sounds more like Outlook express possible, espcecially if he can access webmail...anyone else think that or just me :D | davidb (5576) | |
2004-05-06 10:06:00 | Have run adaware and spybot, and avg virus checker - all latest tables. When I click on properties for Paradise when connected it says 189 errors under received after only 29 minutes conected! How can I tell if it is my modem or the actual line feed to the PC?

2004-05-06 10:12:00 | Can you take your PC to someone else's house and try your connection there? Then use your settings on their PC and compare And also ask someone you know if you can use their dial up account to connect to their ISP at your place. Then you will know whether it's your line, your PC, or your ISP with the problem. J :D

2004-05-06 10:13:00 | Wolf, I wish mine was that quick. I am running a new Compaq 2.4 processor, 128 ram, etc, and I just checked that link you left, and my download speeds are between 4.37kbps, and 3.36kbps. The only good thing I can think of, is that they are at least consistently between those two lots of numbers. LOL | supergran (108) | |
