234692 2004-05-06 06:01:00 I am a student about to head off overseas sometime in the next few months . For this, I’d like to get a digital camera to capture some photos and maybe small video clips to bring back . The main limitation being my budget; which lies around the $300 mark, including the memory card . Seeing as I’m only going for 9 days, I think a 32Mb card will do me fine . Looking at prices everywhere, including PriceSpy, I have come up with two quite decent cameras, both 2mp; they are the Fuji A205S and Kodak DX6230 . The main concern for me is that both of them allow for video capturing, however, the Fuji does not record any sound .

Having a search back in time, metla seems to own a DX6230 . The sample picture he had in that post was good enough for my requirements, hence, I have chosen to go 2mp only .

Shopping around, Noel Leemings seemed to have the best deal around, the Kodak for $249 and Fuji for $229 including a free Q1 *normal, with flash, etc . camera* and a roll of film

Specification for Kodak ( . kodak . com/eknec/PageQuerier . jhtml?pq-path=1152&pq-locale=en_US" target="_blank">www . kodak . com)

Specification for Fuji ( . fujifilm . com/JSP/fuji/epartners/digitalA205Specs . jsp?dbid=616699&item=I616699&subitem=SIDataSpecSheets616699&urltype=dataspec&NavBarId=SIDataSpecSheets616699" target="_blank">www . fujifilm . com)

Does anyone have experience and feedback in regards to the mentioned models above . Can you recommend either one?

Also, as far as memory cards go, could anyone recommend any shop in Auckland that sell cheap, despite good quality, i . e . non generic, etc . , memory cards?

Thanks a lot,

234693 2004-05-06 06:16:00 A 2 MP camera is going to be an "obsolete" model: the starting level now is 3 . 2 :D So there should be plenty of special prices around . (Dick Smith have had one of their 2MP Dolphins at about $150 recently) .

What's the "roll of film" with the Fuji?

Just about any camera will make you happy . . . as a "point and shoot" . ;-)

Oner thing to watch is batteries: a camera which has a rechargable will save you a bit of money . Alkaline AAs have a short life .

Optical zoom is nice to have . "Digital zoom" is not; it's rubbish . :D

I know, however, I still perfer to have a camera with a good brand, such as Kodak, Fuji, Nikon, Sony and the likes

Just a roll of normal film ;-) *To put in the Q1 camera, which apparently if the website is right, retails for about $30USD*

I would like, if possible, as simple video function, (hence, meaning audio too, as silent videos can be a bit boring :(

Point taken, I will have a look . We do have a few rechargeable AA batteries .

I wonder how my mother copes with one that has no zoom whatsoever . I have just saw that DX6200 (6230 without optical zoom) is at Harvey Normans for $179 . Seems like a good deal to me, anyone have any comment to this one, I don't think optical zoom is that important, we're still coping with a 15 yr~ish normal camera at the moment with no zoom whatsoever .

Could argue we are outdated .

234695 2004-05-06 07:48:00 Technie, I use 2 3 & 6 mp cameras, mostly Fuji. I dont have experience with the Kodak, but I have used the Fuji 205. For a basic camera it is very good. With a good printer & paper I've had excellent A4 prints from this camera.

Graham is correct in advising optical zoom. You wont realise until you use it. It is important.

The Fuji 205 uses 2 AA batteries. With several sets of NiMh rechargeables you will never be caught out without power for the camera.

As to the video. If you intend to only have a 32Mb card, the number of minutes you can record will be very limited, & not leave much for the images.

Good luck.

Only if I had thought about that earlier ;-) . . I wouldn't be stuck with such a long name to sign in with .

I understand where your coming from, I don't plan to record any video on my trip, however, may do so in the future . The A205 does not have audio recording right?

Anyone know as to where I could get some cheaper memory cards from in Auckland?

Thanks people,

234697 2004-05-07 07:26:00 Looking at a few sample pictures, taken by independent owners, I do think that 2mp should be enough for entry users.

Cheers,

234698 2004-05-07 07:28:00 BTW, follow the suggestion, go optical zoom if your budget allows... ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)

Ive owned 3 digital cameras, a 1.2mp (the shame), a 3.2mp and now a 5.1mp Kodak (DX4530) and from my experience the kodak has been the best value of the lot. I would definatly recommend buying a Kodak camera if all the others of the brand are of the same quality.

234700 2004-05-23 08:42:00 Good evening,

I'd just like to let you know that I have made my purchase. Very happy with it so far.. infact, I personally think 2MP is still plenty. Very suprised with the quality of this one. Doesn't have the blurry parts some camera have. Only downside being, if you specify to put the camera in flash, instead of AUTO, it will come up wif a white fading circle in the middle

Package:

Fujifilm FinePix A205S + Bonus Fujifilm Q1 camera (with flash) and Roll of film + Fujifilm 64MB xD Memory card= $229.99 from Noel Leemings

Will put up some pictures when I have time, for future reference. Meanwhile, waiting for my batteries to charge. Man, these gadgets are power hungry ;-)

234701 2004-05-25 05:00:00 if you are looking for a basic digicam, with no zoom, don't go past the new olumpus c-160, it got a really nice olympus lens, it takes the new xd card (so its got the ability to take up to 1gb!) its got the 3.2 megapixel. It also doesn't have any of the colour casts that I find the fugi and kodak have. Its retail is $349 at moment.

Also Olympus are really good with their warrenties, I have seen them get them back to you in 1 week. Kodak on the other hand do all their replies in Australia. It will take more than a month to get a kodak digital camera repaired. If you have any questions about the repair, you have to fork out for a call to australia, and even then you aren't talking to an australian, you are talking to some one in Asia, who does not speak english well.
