234504 2004-05-05 06:59:00 I have purchased a 160Gb Hdd Western Digital Hdd, installed it in a external Hdd case and plugged it into my USB. XP shows it as WDC WD16 00BB-00DWA0 USB device under hard drives in device manager but its nowhere to be seen in My Computer. I have flashed the latest version of my motherboards bios. Is this a operating system or a motherboard problem?
This hdd is to be shared between a few downloading freaks so I'd rather not have it installed internally.
My system- Pentium4 2.8GHz, 1024MB DDR RAM, GeForce4 Mx440 on a GA-8KNXP Ultra motherboard, XP.

234505 2004-05-05 07:15:00 Western Digital has a FAQ on this, with the 137 GB limit with XP. You can read it here (wdc.custhelp.com m93X2NudD02NjkmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=) Jen C (20)
234506 2004-05-05 16:52:00 Thanks for the link. I have followed the instructions for upgrading XP to 48-bit LBA but still the Hdd doesn't show up. Perhaps my Bios doesn't support the 48-bit LBA, I will drop them a line to confirm this. leongs (5614)

234508 2004-05-06 04:56:00 No it hasn't been formatted. In the past the formatting was either automatic or was done in My Computer. If none of these kick in where do I do the formatting? I have tried the Command Prompt but there is no drive letter assigned to this drive. leongs (5614)
234509 2004-05-06 05:10:00 Righ-click My Computer and select Manage
On the left Select Disk Management the you should see a screen on the right with your HDD's and CD-ROM/DVD drives.

Here you can Partition, format, change drive letters etc
You should see your internal HDD (most likely called Disk 0) and also the new HDD (most likely called Disk 1).
Right click on this and Create partions etc as required.

I know your post is two and a half years old, but I wanted to thank you VERY much! I was wracking my brain over this and found your post and it is exactly what was needed!
