234886 2004-05-07 00:16:00 Metla, My comp has a lan port on the m/b, (PLAN) , but does not appear to have an external plug. JJJJJ (528)
234887 2004-05-07 00:29:00 My m/b is a gigabyte ga8ipe 1000.
I intended to get a full install done by telecom, but Ihug made it sound so easy I thought I'd look at doing it myself.
So if I get the Ihug/DSE package with an ASH1149 ethernet router and 1 line filter, telecom will do the rest ???

234888 2004-05-07 00:50:00 That board does not have built in LAN unless it is REV 3 or Pro model.

You will need a line filter for each jack point in the house that has something connected to it. As before, if you have a fax and/or phone connected to the jack that your machine is to be connected to then you will need the double adapter which has a straight through, unfiltered, connection for the router and a filtered one for the fax/phone. don't get the two mixed up.

I'm a little suspiceous of the DSE routers. Some people have had very good service out of them while others have had poor performance. My personal preference is for quality brand name (usually) parts like Dynalink, Speedtouch, Linksys, etc. If your signal is marginal then it could make the difference. If you are set on the DSE, ask the salesperson in clear terms if the router is satisfactory for your usage and situation, if the answer is yes you can remind them of that if it doesn't do the job.

234889 2004-05-07 00:51:00 So getting back to the lingo part, router pronounced rauter or rowter, the machine tool, derives from Old English wrotan, to dig or to furrow . There was a vowel change in the 16 century that in many parts of the British Isles turned it to 'raut' or 'rowt', especially down in the south-west . This inflection, the Pilgrim Fathers took with them to America, where it has been preserved .

However the Americans are unable to pronounce French words so a 'route' ie . a road or a way also became a 'raut' .
For example they have a 'Notre Dame' university, which they pronounce dame, as in 'there is nothing like a dame', rather than the more correct 'darm' . After all, 'Notre Dame' is very French .

Route(r) is from the French la route and the Old French 'rute' .

This difference between Old English and Old French is a major reason for pronunciation differences . Then again the Greeks had a word for it . . . . . . . . :)

234890 2004-05-07 01:54:00 Murry, I'm not overly entheuastic about DSE either, but they do a package deal for Ihug customers. Router and filter plus a $35 credit with ihug. Presumably Ihug are satisfied with their product. JJJJJ (528)
234891 2004-05-07 11:51:00 I had a nasty experience with DSE router, too. And, finally return it and they refunded me without questions asked. Probably, this is the plus point about DSE?

Dynalink RTA 220 is a good ADSL router - looks nice, reliable and configuration is a breeze, just a minute or two of your time and it's up and running.

234892 2004-05-07 12:12:00 Quite a few who visit here have the dse XH1149 router and found it to be very good, including me :D Jester (13)
234893 2004-05-08 23:16:00 Ive got a Netgear Router/Firewall/ADSL/switch/wireless access point all in one and I haven't really had any problems with that; its easy to configure, fiddle with, and does some things automatically if thats what you want, plus its alot cheaper than some of the others that cost the same! (though unless you think that you're going to want wireless capability in the future there might not be much point) RobbyW (5226)
234894 2004-05-09 12:02:00 I might have missed something - but couldn't see any reference to your wanting to connect a LAN to the Internet. That being the case, just get an internal PCI modem and a 20 buck filter and it's as easy as setting up a DUN Greg S (201)
234895 2004-05-09 17:58:00 I queried Xtra about their reccomendations for a router and got an e-mail from them. They said just get any adsl modem. If that doesn't work a router will not work either.
Now I'm more confused than ever.
