234812 2004-05-06 22:47:00 I think the main thing that sets them apart is not that the ATI card is slightly faster, its that it is smaller and cooler.

Even if the ATI card was a bit slower than the Nvidia one, it would still be better with those qualities of being smaller and cooler.

Why can Nvidia not do this? Is it some technological thing that they have not sorted out yet?

I agree with whover it was with the 5700. Even though that is considered a mid range card, i see it as a high end card for me, currently with a geforce 2 mx.

Still, its interesting to read about ATI whipping Nvidia once again.

Yes you did, read below.

Melta's post was merely saying a new Ati card had just been released on the market that will put Nivida newly released cards to shame.

True, so at which point you got the feeling that Melta's is pushing or saying that everyone should get one of the super dupa display card?

Like you said yourself, you don't play serious 3D games and you're happy with your 5700. What about those people that does play serious games who also want top frame rate + picture quality?

And there's the "I must have factor" whether need or no need, some people will buy it regardless.

Cheers

234814 2004-05-07 00:27:00 I think the purpose of this thread was initially to draw attention to the very competitive and rapidly advancing video card battles between ATI and Nvidia. Many people that read this forum will be interested in the latest news and reviews, but not everyone has the time to go out and find the articles themselves. Thumbs up to Metla for drawing attention to it and offering an opinion. It's nice to come to a forum and discuss the latest advances in technology with like-minded individuals. Although there are a lot of people out there who probably don't need a high end card, it doesn't mean they don't want to keep up with what is going on. Sb0h (3744)
234815 2004-05-07 00:32:00 Referring back to the original post....you'd have to wonder what magic ATI is going to produce when they pull the stops out and produce a new design. Sb0h (3744)

Well said :-) Good on you.

Thanks to Metla for the heads up on this, I'd not heard of it.

Thanks to Elephant, for adding some spice to the life of those who want it without realising

Thanks to IDG for your forum, your support for me through this journey to get this Award has been much appreciated

Thanks to my mother, father, family.....

234818 2004-05-07 08:03:00 i dont know how you can say that ATI has whooped nvidia this time around i actually see much the same sort of stats if not more pronounced this time around, ie ATI wins in direct 3d games and Nvidia ownz in open gl games, in some of the reviews i saw the 6800GT ( a lower end 6800) even outpaced the x800 XT in a couple of tests, so please dont go saying the Nvidia has once again been fully and totally beaten, as this time around the performance stats are soooo much closer robert6655 (5176)
234819 2004-05-07 08:52:00 Heh, yes, I have just read some other reviews. It seems some of them aimed at one particular card. Biased or something, is that the word?

I just read that Nvidia supports pixel shader 3 or something, whereas ATI does not.

well they complety whipped them from an eginering perspective, and the card is superior in 90 percent of real worl applications.Opengl does have suport but nothing like DX does.

Not that its any skin off my nose, ill be going for the best performing card in my price range, which i can garentee wont be the top end.

As to the stats being close, well apart from a few months where nvidia lagged behind the stats have largely been so close that no one would notice without extensive benchmarking.

Much more to the issue then just performance benchmarks.

Bear in mind everyone, that this guy has a rather large bias towards nvidia!
