234716 2004-05-06 10:23:00 Can you access the webmail to get your mail or have you only tried it through Outlook etc? What are your downloads like off paradise's file servers? davidb (5576)
234717 2004-05-06 10:40:00 It sounds to me like the problem is with your phone line, it is always
very difficult to determine if it is the phone line or your PC.
I think Telecom guarantee a minimum line speed of 9600kbps, which is very slow, you are right on that limit.
You are with Paradise so you are on the Telstra network, so you might find Telecom are not to interested in the problem, but they are still responsible for the line between the Xchange and your house.
If Telecom do find a fault with your line you won't have to pay for it.
hope that helps.
P.S not too sure about the minimum line speed thing, check with telecom

Yep you are correct, Just tried his pc at my place with telstra line & same result as telecom line.
I setup his mail account on my No 2 pc and outlook express worked fine.
I'm reinstalling IE & outlook express off latest pc world cd & I'll let you know how it goes.

234719 2004-05-06 10:50:00 Yeah I'm pretty sure the minimun speed is 9600 too...but check with TCNZ. davidb (5576)
234720 2004-05-06 11:43:00 may be old news for you know dude...

xtramsn.co.nz

reckon Sue was on to things for you early on.. but then I don't see any reference in the support posts for O/s you are using.... I would be looking into registries rather than defragging etc.. coincides datewise with a viral infection...

There are other spyware/malware tools listed in the Spyware FAQ that you could try, eg HijackThis and CWShredder, just for peace of mind . The HijackThis can produce a logfile that you can paste here for analysis .

> How can I tell if it is my modem or the actual line feed to the PC?

Only by trying another modem (an external one, preferably) or by borrowing someone else's internet connection and logging on to another ISP .

As ajja has pointed out, you have not indicated which version of Windows you are running . Although it seems unlikely since you have scanned with an up-to-date AV, it is possible that you may have the Sasser worm if you have Win XP or 2000 . If you do you can rule out this possibility by following the directions on this page ( . microsoft . com/security/incident/sasser . asp" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) .

Good luck and keep us posted with the results . :-)

234723 2004-05-06 22:55:00 If Telecom find a fault on the line they will fix it without you having to pay if:

- The fault is from the termination at the house to their network (their line).

- If you pay a Line Maintenance Fee, they will fix the fault within the building (your line), from the entry point at the house to the phone jack. The $81 charge is then not applicable, ask first before committing.

If you don't pay the maintenance fee they will charge you for repairing your line.

Supergran, your speed is in Kilo Bytes WolfSGB is stated in kilo bits (although that is not real clear in the post). There are eight bits to a byte so 7KB (Bytes) is the theoretical top speed at which dialup can run (56kb) but most people get anywhere between 3.6 (28.8) and 50 (6.25). Telecoms miserable lower limit IMO is not fit for purpose and therefore illegall (for some) becuase most connections will time out before anything useful can be achieved but, first it has to be Telecoms problem and not yours before you can get redress.

Unfortunately you have a tedious process of elimination to go through to narrow down the fault. If you have made no changes to your hardware or software that could have triggered to problem then look for outside influence as per other posts but, including MS updates, eg, if you use windows auto update and it's upgraded your drivers for you or patched you settings, bingo. Sasser would be top of my list. Any road/pole works locally? Wet/humid weather can turn a dodgy connection into an awful or none existent one, even for buried cables.

Hope you sort it soon. I remember too well the frustration of a dodgy dialup connection.

234724 2004-05-07 00:17:00 Good time to remind ourselves of the benefits of restore point option for Xp ................programs/sytem tools/ accessories/sytem restore (and settings)

Create a shortcut in start menu to set restore point ad hoc...and also set a autoamted restore point creation schedule (once a week mebbe?.. your call!)
