234765 2004-05-06 09:56:00 Hi all...

We have shifted house recently and now the connection speed on the dial-up modem only ever gets to 19Kbps. The very first connection in the new house was 46 Kbps, so I have (rightly?) deduced it's not the phoneline here. ISP is Xtra.
Nothing has been changed in the computer, and the latest modem drivers have been loaded.
This same modem used to always connect at about 48Kbps.

It seems strange, but the actual downloading of files does not (seem) to take much longer.
I seem to remember the was a website I went to many moons ago that told me my avarage down- and upload speed.

Anybody have any idea which site that was? Or better still how to get the modem running at it's old speed of about 48Kbps.

TIA

Julia

234766 2004-05-06 10:03:00 firstly do some testing by downloading some compressed files from a good known server and use something other than IE to read out your download speed.

if its logon speed changes a lot eg from 46 to 19 then most likly you have poor phones lines. could a simply as a poor lead to the phone jack or problem in lines in between the exchange and your house.

www.cnet.com have a bandwidth tester.

234769 2004-05-06 21:32:00 Not sure I believe that site - shows 85.72 in 1.75 sec on my 48k modem - it is a ISA hardware one so might be better than the newer models.
