1361998 2013-12-08 05:33:00 Well you would need one if you want to write Blu Ray Discs.

If you only want to play Blu ray, and write DVD/CD's then a Blu Ray Combo Drive will do fine and are cheaper.

My main PC has a Blu Ray writer, but the Media Center only has a Blu Ray Combo.

1361999 2013-12-08 05:55:00 IMO like WT. If you want to write BR discs I guess that's the option. But even with our DVD Writer we only ever in history got 2x 25 disc spindles. I much prefer multiple HDs - stuff stored on one HD but have a 2nd and 3rd HD of the same stuff just in case. Also much easier to manage files so less duplicates etc. and version managing. 1362000 2013-12-08 06:13:00 I'm still waiting to find out....my media device is only used to load the occasional on CD game, and I have yet to come across a Bluray one. pctek (84)
1362001 2013-12-08 07:17:00 Short answer, No.

Long answer;
I think optical drives are losing favour, I didn't bother with one at all in this PC and it hasn't been an issue. Also the disks are too expensive, hard drives work out as far cheaper storage.
For the price of a Blu-ray writer you could easily get a 2TB external hard drive, by contrast 2TB of Blu-ray disks will cost you somewhere between $350 & $500 depending on brand and how many you buy at a time.
The same money would get you at least 2 more external hard drives and you could keep keep 3 copies of everything.

It just doesn't make sense unless you want to burn disks to supply to others or to author your own movies to play in a Blu-ray player (because anything else would be illegal right?)
Even then a media player than has a hard drive or a USB connection or streams over the network still works out as a cheaper and more convenient option.

Personally I think the only place left for optical media is for distribution of commercial media and for the burning of the occasional boot disk on CD or DVD for those things you can't easily do from windows.

External drives are only partly OK for some uses --- Tell us where movies are supplied to purchase or rent from the Video shops or online rental places like Fatso, where they supply on a External Drive (with the exception of Downloading)

When We rent a Blu Ray Movie it plays on the Media Center which has a Blu Ray Drive. At the moment NZ internet availability of movies (Legally) and speed are too Limited and still to slow for the majority of people.

1362003 2013-12-08 08:55:00 Surely the answer to the question depends on what you want to do with it! There is no context to your question. johnd (85)

Sure, the question was about writers and that's what I was talking about. If you want to play Blu-rays obviously you need a player or drive of some kind, still doesn't make a writer a worthwhile investment. I have an external USB Blu-ray combo drive if I need it and my PS3 plays rented movies just fine. Movies are one of the things I was referring to by "distribution of commercial media". I wasn't suggesting there is no use for a optical drive, just that I think disks are on the way out and writers are not much use to most people.

1362005 2013-12-08 22:29:00 With netbooks and tablets, what are optical discs :p

The only discs we use are old collections for old utilities, Win7 boot CD/DVD. Which are for the larger computers but seldom used. USB boot for the others are required. 2.5" portable HD instead of 3.5" so much easier to use .... More movies and video's we own are converted to HD storage. Readers are far more useful yes with rental services etc.

1362006 2013-12-08 23:32:00 I bought an external one a couple of weeks ago because I bought a HD Camcorder and want to keep these movies as BD movies rather than DVD which is SD.. Sure I could just write the files to a dual layer DVD but they don't store much when HD is involved.. paulw (1826)
