1339907 2013-05-06 22:12:00 I saw this on TV this morning. Looks promising but could well open to fraudsters. Read here. (www.3news.co.nz) Bobh (5192)
1339908 2013-05-06 23:20:00 Nah the guy is just looking for his minute in the spotlight... Literally just FUD spreading and scaremongering. The cards are here, now, already in NZ. My bet is that the "security guy" has just got one, done some half-baked research online, decided he doesn't like it, and broken out the tinfoil hats.

Also, you don't *need* to have a PIN either to use them, stupid %@#$ journalists!

Basically NFC payment is just that, "Near-field", being about 1-2CM tops... You *can't* hop in your car and drive down the road. Also, you don't need any specialist equipment either, your latest Galaxy S3 or S4 smartphone for example can read your credit card details. It *can't* read the printed number on the back which is never stored digitally on the card.

On top of this, it's more secure than the current system a lot of Americans use. While over there, it's very common to just hand over your card, they disappear out back for a few minutes with it (Where they could easily just write down the details on paper before putting it through the system... All details, including the CCV code) and then they return a while later and hand it back to you. This negates that problem entirely, your card never has to leave your hand.

Yes, fraud is possible, but it's a whole lot *less* likely than the current options of fraud, and the security around it is *better*. This is why the banks are jumping onboard with it.

On top of it, as mentioned, the banks / card companies are quite happy to reimburse you if your card is used fraudulently, so you have nothing at all to worry about :)

1339910 2013-05-06 23:34:00 Chill's right on the money. I tried scanning both my payWave card and my AT HOP card with his Nexus 4 at the last meetup, and it couldn't pick up either of them through my wallet. That's good enough for me. pcuser42 (130)

Had to laugh when that guy mentioned that, The scanners don't have the range to read a card from 10+ Mtrs away, esp when its face down on a machine.

Blimey some machines have problems reading the details when almost touching lol.

1339914 2013-05-07 00:53:00 With tap and go - what happens if someone picked up pizza and paid with your card willingly then the person reports the card stolen and gets free pizza :illogical:

Also something not tap and go but sorta related. I've tried tried paying with Shell (Z) petrol stations. You are supposed to pay before you use the petrol machine. My first time like normal, I pumped petrol and then swiped it but the system takes about 5mins to reset and the service guys cannot reset it quicker, so if it was busy the previous car could actually pump with your credit card ....

1339915 2013-05-07 01:12:00 What actually powers these Cards in order for them to transmit the required information? B.M. (505)
1339916 2013-05-07 01:15:00 Interesting how slack over the years we get with our money as technology "improves"

A way to dodge credit card fees for husband and wife is to use the same card. No your not supposed to blah blah blah yet it happens. Why? Because no one checks the cardholder name or signature against the person using it. Have pin number you in! Now we have a situation where you dont need even a pin number let alone a signature check.

Guess what though banks going to say tough luck when you get fleeced.
