I believe that all primary schools should concentrate on the 3 Rs first & foremost. No computers. No airy fairy subjects. No social claptrap. Basic education, manners, & common sense Ideas. I read somewhere this last few days that a University was complaining that applicants were not of suffient ability to do the couses & were having to run Remedial Course for thr students first. Why was I not surprised!!!!!! But maybe I am wrong. PJ At least 2 of the 3 Rs will always be essential to basic fundamentals of learning(writing is being superceded by typing) even though they are sadly becoming more overlooked by each generation. Computing devices are pretty much accepted as part of every day like although probably not yet utilised to their full educational potential which ironically doesn't take money but teachers with different ideas on how to get students to make the best use of them during class time. |

| 1361423 | 2013-12-03 22:08:00 | An 8 year old requiring a PC at school..?? 2x .. But seriously for study and work I would stick whatever school/work uses and that might be MS... Sticking with the same hardware may have merits too. I guess I could use the cloud too but kids may not get accessed to a 3G sim, might becomes quite expensive but over time I guess it's moving towards mobility. It might still be useful to have a local copy just in case and it's difficult for large files / SS / database etc. I may be youngish with a old style I still keep my emails but I guess again nowadays they are using more Instant Messages rather than archival even for personal reasons it's just consume and delete. Even if you can archive it, it's can be difficulty to trawl thru years of stuff just online. |

Schools functioned for 100+ years without PC's, how can they be NEEDED. If schools want to teach PC skills, have that as a separate class , where usuage can be tightly controlled . Dont burden broke parents with having to get onto the PC/Tablet buy/upgrade/replace bandwagon for all 3 of their kids. It wont just be 1 PC each kid, these would need to be upgraded/repaired several times across the years each kid is at school . Pens & paper are 'needed' , not PC tech. :-) If its a rather Elite Private school, then different story. |

This is what you get when you try to keep the "haves" who are able to afford what they want and the "have nots" who can't on a level playing field. Its a case of figuring out the most affordable way to get the gap from getting any wider. Computers or computing devices may not be needed for every subject on the curriculum but they are needed for a high enough number of subjects to consider making them "required" for learning. Don't forget that apps have a whole lot of different purposes, whether they be for reading, maths, physics, home economics, art, video editing, recording music, blogging... |

| 1361426 | 2013-12-04 03:02:00 | My 7 year old does not have a requirement for his own hardware yet but his class all have blogs on the class site that they code themselves and this is a kid that is still learning basic math and handwriting skillls. Don't tell me they are not needed, of course they are needed. computer skills are a necessity and the sooner kids are immersed in the technology the better. |
