1361412 2013-12-02 22:46:00 An 8 year old requiring a PC at school..??

I guess in a world where most things we do rely on apps or software, then having a PC or tablet to learn them on is pretty relevant. My 6 year old niece has a whole lot of math-a-letic and spelling games that she plays on her iPad all the time. She is almost a year ahead at school for her age group in reading. She is also a bit of a natural with numbers too. She also plays Deer Hunter 2014, Temple Run and a bunch of other games on her iPad.

In that case my 6 year old niece will be at Einstein's level by they time she hits form 2 then :) I remember a couple of computer classes where we were shown how to write in Apple Basic to get your name to print on the screen or to get a line of colour across the screen when I was in form One I think and that was fairly straight forward to do. Unfortunately I didn't find any resources to take that learning any further at that stage.

Perhaps she's just smarter than average & a bit geeky ??(compliment, not an insult)
If there were no Ipads or she was in school 20 years ago, she would still be above the grade regardless, simply because she wants to learn.

Lets be honest here, kids will see Ipads/tablets as toys, not a learning device or text book replacement.
I also have to wonder , what % of these 'learning' devices are broken within a year, forcing parents to replace it.

She's definitely not geeky, she plays ripper rugby with her younger brother's team on Saturday mornings, she's very creative and artistic and she loves to go rabbit hunting with her dad at the weekends. She is kinda smart too. I think she gets it from her mum. Fortunately she also enjoys schoolastic stuff. I think it helps that her parents make sure that she spends time with educational games as as well as with recreational ones.

1361417 2013-12-03 05:45:00 Amen!

Ah I dunno, I can do over 90% of the things I want to from the browser these days.

Only thing a Chromebook couldn't do for me is play DotA2. Everything else, sweet as... I'd imagine it's largely the same for most school students too.

Well these children don't store stuff on the cloud

They must be the underprivileged ones ;)

1361419 2013-12-03 20:33:00 Hmmm, so a bunch of kids are expected to lug around heavy and expensive bits of tech? I can't see that lasting.

If the school stores them there will become a potential for theft. Then there's the inevitable damage issues, charging issues.

My memories of that age at school seems to be of a bunch of reckless impulsive kids who are of the 'bend it to see when it breaks' mindset.

$400 would buy a whole lot of books for some real schooling!

1361420 2013-12-03 20:51:00 Being an old fart of 75, cynical, opinionated, thief of younger working peoples tax dollars, well educated, well read, drifting slowly into dementia... I believe that all primary schools should concentrate on the 3 Rs first & foremost. No computers. No airy fairy subjects. No social claptrap. Basic education, manners, & common sense Ideas.

I read somewhere this last few days that a University was complaining that applicants were not of suffient ability to do the couses & were having to run Remedial Course for thr students first. Why was I not surprised!!!!!!

But maybe I am wrong. PJ

1361421 2013-12-03 21:18:00 Well playing devils advocate year 8 (Form 2) is not Primary School it is Intermediate, that being to prepare them for High School.
These kids are 11 and 12, maybe 13 (I expect) and its a good thing that they are getting used to computers as they WILL need them next year in High School.
