1361265 2013-12-02 06:39:00 Downloaded fine for me. :thanks Wainui.

But the Question is: What is the best file type to change an AVI file to to maintain acceptible quality whilst reducing the size?

.WMV seems to have followers? Testing to be done. :D

It's not quite that simple ...

The 'filetype' (avi, mkv etc.) is just a container format to *contain* the various video and audio streams, which can be encoded in a variety of ways using different compression codecs (divx, xvid, h.264, mp3, aac ... etc.). Also each of these compression alorithms has a mind-numbing array of options that are generally incomprehensible unless you are a serious DV geek.

What is *best* depends a lot on the devices you want to play it on and the codecs they support, and a compromise between the quality you find acceptable and the space you want to use.

Bottom line is, get an easy to use program with a simple scale from 'small and bad' to 'big and good' and do some tests.

YMWV.

edit: wmv is shitty - avoid.

Depending on how good the original is will also result in how much you can reduce it and still have it acceptable.

The program you downloaded will reduce, just may need to muck around a bit.

One that is a lot easier is HandBrake (handbrake.fr) Once you load up your file, on the video Tab you can adjust the quality ( slider on the right) - This is really hit and miss to what you get.

Note: If you download HB, click on the link for windows ( assuming you are using windows) the next page touch nothing, a download will appear after a few moments.

For example one show ,just reduced the quality, below are the same screen shots ( close enough) ones the original the other the reduced. ( note this was done to extreme almost to show what happens), it reduced the size from roughly 1GB to 350MB

its obvious ;)

1361268 2013-12-02 09:07:00 Question #1 that EVERYBODY should have asked:
What's it going to be played in. This determines exactly the type of codecs / container you can use, or if you simply have to lower the bitrate.
