1361843 2013-12-06 00:23:00 Hi Team, Here is a weird one for you.
I have a desk top comp with a P4-2.53 and 2 Gb DDR 400 ram which I am trying to resurrect.
There are 2 HDD’s. a 40Gb Segate and a 80 Gb Maxtor.

I can format (fast and/or full) both HDD's successfully.

I can install Win 2K Pro on either HDD and all works perfectly.

I can install Win XP Pro on the Maxtor and it still works perfectly.

When I try to install Win XP Pro on the Segate I get to the “select partition” to use question where the machine shuts down, (powers off).

I have only one HDD in the comp at a time.

I can not power on again until I disconnect the power to the computer from the wall socket.

I have swapped out the PSU, Ram, Video card and all cables. All un-necessary hardware has been removed.

Both Win 2k and Win XP are genuine MS products with license and product key.

I guess that the Segate could be problem but why would it work OK under Win 2k Pro ?

Any ideas guys ?

1361848 2013-12-06 03:59:00 Tried another IDE cable / the other IDE connector on the mobo? To see if that works? Speedy Gonzales (78)

Yep, done both of those.

1361850 2013-12-06 05:01:00 Have you got the jumper correct? Not set to some size limit mode?

Maybe you need to look for a BIOS update for your motherboard. It may be some kind of bug between the Seagate and IDE controller in Windows XP only.

This HDD has been working with XP for a couple of years for business and private use.
I got a laptop recently for private use and formatted the segate HDD to use for business only.
A fresh install of XP worked for a while but then stopped working whilst restoring my business data.
With this in mind it is unlikely to be a bios or jumper problem as I haven't interfered with either of them. I wouldn't know how too !
Could either be changed by the system or software ?
If so how do I check them ?
Cheers,

1361852 2013-12-06 05:52:00 Remember, the segate HDD works fine with win2k pro but not winxp.
Both win2k and win xp work ok on the maxtor drive
