234936 2004-05-07 00:29:00 I'm after a new fax/phone/plain paper copier for a small home business situation. Can anyone recommend a new one.

Please don't bother to recommend Canon. I've had the above in a Canon as well as Canon printers and have found them to be absolute rubbish.

234938 2004-05-07 01:36:00 May I ask why you think the Canons are absolute rubbish? CYaBro (73)
234939 2004-05-07 05:28:00 Two Canon printers over 8 years that have consistently broken down with various faults compared with 3 HP's over 10 years that have NEVER needed any maintenance.

Current Canon fax/copier is always having paper jams.

Enough said!! It could just be me but I prefer not to buy Canon in the future. Purchasers perogative!

234940 2004-05-07 05:38:00 I guess it all comes down to personal experience because I'm opposite of you :) Very first ink jet I bought was an HP and had heaps of problems with it. Since then have only ever had Canon printers/MFC's (about 6 in the last 10 years). Then someone gave me an HP printer which crapped out as well. CYaBro (73)
234941 2004-05-07 06:20:00 Personally my experience with Canon is in line with Bruce's . In a large business (= dozens of printers) the various HP units just kept going, and probably still are going .

The Canon ones were poorly supported, buggy and some had to be scrapped when upgrades to operating systems were done . We simply refused to buy anything Canon after that .

I had an HP MFC (PSC 750) but it did not do fax . When I needed the last set of cartridges, I opted to replace the MFC with an all-in-one that included fax, to reduce the space needed in the office area .

I run a small business, and the main need was for the MFC to be networked . I went with a Brother MFC 3820 CN . It was about $425 + GST from memory, and not bad value considering all the features .

Its certainly not a photo printer, but I didn't need it for that . It handles small embedded colour photos in reports fine, and thats all I use the colour for, as all normal printing is on a Laser (HP 2100)

The Brother is a bit slower than the PSC 750, but has 4 ink tanks so cost to run should be lower . It also has camera card slots, so is useful as a card reader on the network .

The auto page feed for photocopies and faxes is a real bonus .

Scanner is average, but just fine for the use it gets . Fax is very good, every option plus some .

There are certainly better units available than the Brother, but for the purpose I needed it for its just fine . Its quite good value, and thats why I bought it .
