235209 2004-05-08 05:48:00 How weird.... I (and all my friends) got the same TXT from Telecom saying we had sent 499 TXT messages. Maybe we should sue Telecom and get part of our $10 back for not using up our 500 quota Madam_Lash (5582)
235210 2004-05-08 07:20:00 You never proved to us that this is actually from Telecom. Growly (6)

Actually it states that txts are 0.19 per text to a maximum of $10. If you did 499 then it would have cost you $94.81 without the $10 maximum. A real bargin as you only paid for about a 10th of what you used.

I think 500 a month is pretty fair number of txts.

Those who do agree can always switch to Vodaphone.

235212 2004-05-08 10:37:00 Firstly, I'll state a few facts.

- I am not a Telecom mobile customer
- My employer isn't either
- I do send and receive text messages though, I find them useful to pass on or receive information without having to call the person
- I probably text at most three times a day
- I have pre-teen and teenage kids. None has a phone, but they all borrow mine or my wife's when at sports, newspaper runs etc, to let us know where they are etc

So, taking away the issue of how many messages are being sent and amazement at how this is acomplished, the concern as I see it is that Telecom promoted a service, which was the reason many took up the offer, then changed the parameters of the service.

Texing is now a part of life. We can't change that.

Those who don't text to excess (or is that txt 2 xs?) may find it difficult to see what the fuss is over and feel that 500 texts are plenty. Whether it's 500 or 5000, the point is that Telecom offered a "all you can eat" plan and now are forcing a limit on it.

Both Telecom and Vodafone promoted text as the 'next best thing' and worldwide we have taken to it like a duck to water.

Put it this way. How would those on this forum who don't text but do have ADSL feel:

If Telecom (or any other corporation) offered a flat rate ADSL service of $20 per month, with no cap, no 'reasonable use' clause, and advertised it heavily with a free period to start with if you switch, then after 6 months decided to cap it to 3 GB and you pay 20 cents per meg over that.

Would we hear cries of 'foul'? I think we would.

235213 2004-05-08 11:14:00 Dont blame Telecom, blame the wreckers who sent excessive amounts of texts.
If you know some one who has sent more than 500 texts a month tell them they are to blame.
DONT BLAME TELECOM blame the people with sad lives.

Just possibly this is a warning so that you don't get a huge bill at some time?

In my opinion Telecom doesn't do too badly.
Quite a few people have the option to buy services from various ISPs.
People have the option to buy whatever they want.
This depends on needs and wallets I would have thought. I use Telecom for local calls and use other providers for ISP and Toll calls. I have texted sometimes to a person that has no landline. This would be about 15 calls over two months.

I fail to see how this is illegal.
You are the person buying the goods or services are you not?

Yes, we sure would .

I think if people are text bombing other people, they should have their phone disconnected from the service . That would happen if you were DOS attacking someone with ADSL .

That would be the only reasonable explanation for using 6000 texts a month .

If you're texting more than 500 a month you should really get a life . I see these people every day, instead of talking with the people in their group around them at the cafe, they have their mobile phones out and are texting random people with their own phones receiving messages every minute . Its quite a sight .

I've also seen people texting other people in the cafe having a little conversation, and they're less than 15m away! Morons, go and talk to them face to face!

I tell you its pretty insane . This next generation of New Zealanders will be socially retarded!

Very, very, very well said. One of the more intelligent comments on the debate Jester. You are quite right re the internet thing, but thats a different matter. How many families shared a cell phone and each TXT. 500 TXTs are not many a month if shared out between 4 or 5 people depending how many kids there are
My guess is that dial-up internet will be next as Telecom try to boost their monetry coffers

How can you say that?????? Telecom changed the rules, not the TXTers. If Telecom offer a "as many as you can send deal" then sorry, that should be what it is. Bad luck to Telecom if eberyone wants to send even 10000 a month I say
