I certainly learned lots when creating both of my Linux from Scratch distributions. I doubt that I would have been able to learn the same things in a similar amount of time with binary distributions.

Depending on what options you've selected in the kernel, it should take about 30mins. My P133 with 32mb of ram did it in 1 hour.

It's not too shabby :) In fact, it was the first distribution I ever used. It was certainly an interesting experience getting it up and going, especially since I knew absolutely nothing about Linux.
