235705 2004-05-11 03:54:00 I have a Sony 52x DVD-Rom CD-RW drive that seems to be able to read burnt disks, games disks (installs games fine), but has problems playing DVD's, (As in will try to load them up but gets into trouble when it reaches the menu screen, and then looks all jittery like it can't read the disk properly), and also will not recognise a blank CD, when I try to burn!!?? If a blank disc goes into the drive, it just keeps telling me to insert CD. This is very strange as not long ago it read DVD's fine and as it was a new PC, but I had not yet checked it's burning capability. Since then, I have haven't managed to burn one CD, or play a DVD. I have heard this could be because I am running Windows 2000, and something is missing from my operating system, but would appreciate it if anyone had any ideas as to what the problem could be. Let me know if you need any more info - Cheers Farcry (5471)
235706 2004-05-11 04:23:00 Have you updated the drivers?I would also say try another dvd program and burning app, that may be your problem. If none of that works you might find its time to update your OS. wolfnerd (5633)
235707 2004-05-11 04:45:00 If this is a new computer, the best way to fix it is to tell the vendor to fix it.:D That's what guarantees are for.

You are welcome to the forum, but if there is a guarantee, that's always the best approach. If the "not so long ago" means that the guarantee has just expired, you could try a lens-cleaning CD, but the lenses don't usually get dirty, unless there are smokers in the same room.;-)

235708 2004-05-11 05:00:00 Thanks for the answers, although in order to keep it short, I didn't explain the whole story. I built my PC near the end of the year - last year with the help of a technician friend. Everything seemed to run fine, and I originally had an Aopen combo drive, which after three months of use, started to make funny noises, so sent I back to the supplier. They then replaced this with a faster Sony combo drive. Up until the time I replaced the drive, the only things I had used it for was playing DVD's, reading burnt program disks, and loading up games, but I had not tried burning anything. Near the end of the life of the Aopen drive, I started to try burning disks, in which it went through the normal procedures O.K, told me it was burning, then when I would check the disk after burning had finished, nothing had changed. Not long after this is when my DVD player started playing up (using WinDVD 4). Anyway, as far as I can tell my drivers are updated, and I haven't any other ideas, but will look around tonight to see if I have missed anything. Farcry (5471)
235709 2004-05-11 05:40:00 One suggestion ... and this caught me once :8}... some burning software sets itself for "dummy" burn, which does everything except burn.

Of course that's no help with the DVD,and if it can't see blank disks. ;-)

235710 2004-05-11 05:51:00 Not sure I understand you but what software are you using to burn? Nero Express has the option of DVD and CD & with my combo CDRW/DVD-R if I insert a blank DVD when its in CD mode it will ask me to insert a disc and the same thing if I have a blank CDR when Im in DVD mode.

Check its in the right mode so it will recogise the correct media.

cheers
