| 235559 | 2004-05-10 21:45:00 | I am running win XP home. I have a Panasonic KX-p7100 Laser printer and a USR Sportster message external modem attached to my comp. Both are controlled by makers drivers. EVERY time I power on the printer windows discovers new hardware and wants to install drivers.!!! But also every time I power on printer it removes my modem drivers. Device manager shows I have no modem. The quick way to get my modem working is Click on Install new hardware/modem/OK and my modem works again. But it has installed Microsoft drivers. So after i finish with my printer and turn it off I have a major arguement with windows. Removing their drivers and re-installing USR drivers. The modem connects at 51 kbs with USR drivers and about 44/46 with windows drivers. What is the connection between my printer and modem? How do I fix it. Note this is not a coincidence. It happens every time without fail. My previous modem was an ambient external with it's own drivers and windows kept wanting to install drivers for an IBM modem. The only way to keep it quiet was to let it install them. Of course they didn't work, but as long as they were there with a red X over them windows was happy. Jack |

Y'know the modems got the port but you turn the printer on and it kicks the modem out of the way so it can have that port. But I would be guessing both are connecting via USB, which would seemingly make this impossible, as each USB plug has a different interupt signed to it. Well that how my logical thinking goes anywho. Try going into device manager and changing the resource settings for these devices. You could also try turning off Driver Verification (Some annoying feature of TCPA microsoft thought they could include with their NT O/S's). Press Winkey + Pause and go to the Hardware tab. Then click on the Driver Signing button beside the device manager button and choose ignore. If that doesn't work, kick XP... reinstall it or get a better OS. |

It would be "impossible" for a parallel port device to interfere with a serial port device except for allocating the same IRQ (say IRQ 7) to both devices. |

| 235562 | 2004-05-11 02:11:00 | I should have said the printer is on LPT 1. The modem on com2. Have also tried modem on com 1. | JJJJJ (528) | ||

| 235566 | 2004-05-11 05:52:00 | nope, and nope . :D An external modem is on the port it's plugged into . It's probably not possible to reassign the actual ports either . The main problem is probably mainly the printer being turned off when the computer starts up . Unless it's got a powersaving mode, you want to turn it on only when you need it . Of course, the OS has decided there isn't one because it was turned off at boot time . I hate that . Even so, loading the printer software should not affect the modem . This is crazy . |
