2004-05-10 08:53:00 | I recently had to crash my computer because it was stuck. Now everytime I start the computer, the internet connect box displays and all it takes is for me to click 'connect', whereas before I had to click the internet icon to produce it and I would rather it didn't display on its own accord, when I have just logged on. It used to firstly come up with a message, 'cannot view page offline' but now that doesn't display (I think) just the above internet connection box. Is there any way that I can stop this from happening. Would appreciate reply. Thanks. | whoMe (5630) | |
2004-05-10 09:04:00 | Greetings, Welcome to PressF1! A few things come to mind here: You've likely installed an application, or caught some virus/spyware, that wants to access the net and is loading at Startup. If this is the case, then goto www.spybot.info and get Spybot Search and Destroy, and www.grisoft.com to get AVG 6.0 Free Edition (If you dont already have Anti-Virus software that us up to date). It would say "cannot view page offline" if you have told Internet Explorer to work in Offline Mode. This is basically where is loads all the websites from the temporary internet cache on your Hard Drive rather than getting a Fresh copy from the internet. When you open Internet Explorer it will have [Working Offline] in the blue toolbar up the very top. If it does, click on File and then click Work Offline. This will take away the tick from next to it and you should be peachy :-) Hope this helps Chill.

2004-05-10 09:12:00 | Hi and welcome to Press F1 :) It sounds like something is running on your computer when it starts, that is trying to connect to the web. Can you remember downloading or installing a new program just before the 'crash'? There are ways to see what loads up on your computer when you start it- but we need to know what version of windows or linux you use. There are a few programs out there that will search your computer and find things that could produce the dialling up box that you are seeing. Two of these programs are called 'AdAware' and 'SpyBot Search and Destroy'. AdAware can be found here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ Spybot can be found here: www.safer-networking.org There are also FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) on this forum. Look near the top right of this page and you will see the FAQ button. They may take a while to load, so be patient :) FAQ 8B may be of interest heres a direct link to it: FAQ 8B (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) Let us know how you get on J :D

Not to critiscise, complain, or put down another PF1'er. Jester & Chilling have given newbe 'whome' with excellent, clear, advice for the problem. Thats the way. Lets keep it like that. Best wishes for all. |

2004-05-10 11:56:00 | there is a nother possiblty beside spyware although I would not rule it out completly >This happened a few weeks back when I was in windows update, checking for updates not sure now that I was actually installing, but I don't think I was then everything froze.... hence problem A incomplete update If I remember correctly some update require a restart then the update process continues and since it appears a crash happened the pc maybe trying to complete the update process
