235380 2004-05-09 11:47:00 I finally had a go at creating a music CD. Used Windows Media Player and immediately created two coasters which play one track each but with the hic-coughs. Useless.

I turned to Nero and read the help files, then followed the Wizard.
Got to the end and Nero politely told me my CD burner didn't come with the software. True.

So, what about Roxio Easy CD Creator 5? At least it should recognise the hardware. Well yes, but nothing about converting MP3 to WAV or anything else.

Not wanting to bother PF1, I set off with my friend Google which led me to various forae (is that right Madam_Lash?) and sites of limited help. Lots of talk about 6x speeds etc but really nothing simple and sensible.

My questions are:
1 Does Media Player convert MP3 to a format I can play in my car CD player?
2 Does the Roxio software do it, and how?
3 Is there a good site for advice? (probably an FAQ but they take ages to load)
4 Is there any software I should download?
5 Should I instead go out and buy the best Roxio or Nero I can find?

I am very confused.

Cheers

235381 2004-05-09 12:20:00 I recomend Nero 5. Nero 6 is bloated.
You will also be able to convert from Wave to mp3 with it but there are a lot of conversion programs on PC World discs.
Have a look at the CD Index on the current PC World CD.
If you are using XP, disable the built in CD burner, see the services list in control panel.

235382 2004-05-09 13:45:00 The May PC World cover CD has some conversion software on it. I go along with Nero as the one to use. There are a couple of small Nero utilities available as seperate downloads for testing and ID'ing your CD hardware. You can then check the CD's manufacturers stie for driver/firmware updates but, I doubt they will be necessary unless it's ancient.

235383 2004-05-09 22:22:00 Thanks chaps. What I assume I need though, is software which will convert MP3 back to WAV since I already have some MP3 on my HD.
I will have a look at the CD list as you suggest.

I also suspect that the Roxio program is a very basic version which I have to upgrade to do what I want.

235384 2004-05-09 23:49:00 A few things come to mind here:
You've probably got an OEM copy of Nero, not designed for your Burner. Use the software that came with it your

Roxio's stuff does it, but you can use the most basic version to do MP3's AFAIK.
Use Goldwave (goldwave.com) to do a Batch Conversion of the songs you want to .wav files and then burn them if that's all you have for the time being.

Personally I would use Nero any day (Well, I'd suggest k3b from http://k3b.sf.net but I doubt it'll work with your OS ;-)) over Roxios software. I hate the new SmartStart they've put in, but I dont use it so its a small gripe.

Did your burner / PC not come with software???

235385 2004-05-10 03:32:00 Thanks Chill. Yes, my burner came with Roxio but being on this forum convinced me I needed Nero. We have Nero at work so thought I would give it a whirl. Looks like it is OEM - I think I just copied it from the HD.

Really the issue is, I cannot find anything in the Roxio Help file which tells me that the MP3 will be converted to WAV. Having wasted 2 CDR discs already, I wanted to be sure I was doing the right thing.

Converting to MP3 isn't a problem. It is going the other way so I have a CD which will play in a car, stereo, walkman etc.

I have looked at a post earlier this year where you gave some helpful advice. Possibly the burn I did make was at too high a speed. Nevertheless the CDR then showed as completely full after burning one song. And yes, all experiments show only one song which skips and is useless.

235386 2004-05-10 04:04:00 Goldwave will do the conversion from MP3 to Wav as mentioned.

Im not 100% positive on this, but Im pretty sure that in the Basic version it only allows you to burn Data CD's and Audio CD's from wav files. If you want to burn Audio CD's from mp3 files you'll have to purchase the complete version.

Either that or just use Goldwave :-)
...Just dont use WMP ;-)

Depending on the burner (If you arent using Buffer Underrun Technology) then yes, you may be burning it too fast. Burn it at around 4x to start with and work your way up, checking it each time.

Hope this helps

235387 2004-05-10 04:36:00 Buy yourself a CD-RW to practice on. It'll cost you $3 or so. But you can wipe it and try again until you get it right. Or/also try the "dummy" write option if the software allows it. Graham L (2)
235388 2004-05-10 05:45:00 Ah yes Graham, good advice, but CDRW won't play in most stereos etc. So I might not be able to test the results outside the computer. Nevertheless, I'll give it a go.

235389 2004-05-10 05:55:00 You could always grab the 50-pack of Cyqove CD-R's from QMB for $20 :-) These do play in most stereos (all Ive tried)!

Let us know how you get on :-)
