235362 2004-05-09 11:20:00 Just recently (10 mins ago) i installed the MS security Update CD on my Windows 98SE computer. everything seemed to go fine, untill i decided to shut down, and i got this error message:

Windows

An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C004A976 in VxD VFAT(01) +
0000 8AB2. This was called from 0028:C150496A in VxD VTDI(01) +
0000 00BA. It may be possible to continue normally.

Press any key to attempt to continue.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot (note you will lose unsaved work ETC)

Press A key to continue....

If anyone knows what this means or whatever or can help, please do!

235363 2004-05-09 11:21:00 Oh, and by the way, pressing any key brings me to the "Windows is shutting down" screen, and then the computer hangs.

when i restart it loads windows normally though.

235364 2004-05-09 11:25:00 And now the thing just shut down properly. (WTF) ?:|

however i would still like to know what that error is for.....

235365 2004-05-09 12:16:00 I installed the update cd as well on Win98se, and kept getting random errors all the time, and everytime I shut down a program it would crash and kill the computer. Crazy stuff.

I had to reformat windows to get rid of that POS.

235366 2004-05-09 12:30:00 I am a great believer in the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
If your computer is working fine, don't update it just because someone says so.
Windows 98 has been around for a long time, how come it needs updating all of a sudden?

Most of the updates are security measures, but unless you have secrets of National importance, & if you keep the firewall & anti virus up to date, this shouldn't be a problem.

235367 2004-05-09 20:30:00 i have seen this message when i use to have 98SE, it has something to do with the virtual memmory file i believe, i'm taking this from the VFAT part which i guess is referencing to virtual File Allocation Table.

Anyway goto microsoft and stick that in a search and it should come up with a knowledgebase answer.

235368 2004-05-09 23:35:00 one of the comman problem i see is installing updates on a damaged OS. if there is damaged files or incorrect versions then the updates can cause havoc. however your system may be running ok even with damaged files so its hard to tell if your wasting your time installing the updates or not. tweak'e (174)
235369 2004-05-10 01:11:00 the OS shouldnt be damaged as i only installed it 2 weeks ago....

anyway, its working fine now - i think it was just something random that hopefully will never come again...

235370 2004-05-10 01:35:00 Well, that's Windows 98!

Probably, that's why people are upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows XP?? ?:|
