2004-05-08 15:57:00 | Hi all. I have a problem with a IBM 560Z Laptop. It was running ok on Windows XP. However, now it wont start at all. I have reformatted the hard drive again after trying and trying to get it to start from a floppy boot disk. My big problem is that after loading windows back onto the machine, it does a restart but says "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." I have been into the Bios and played there also. I set it to start from the Hard disk instead of the floppy as first boot. Still doesn't help. So I am at a loss as to what to do. It has a new Hard Drive in it. Before I formatted it I went in through the Boot Disk and could see the files on it, so it must be working... I think... Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks

2004-05-09 15:10:00 | Heres a link to Knoppix Linux 3.3: a boot from CD linux distribution. It doesn't actually install linux. So if you haven't found somewhere to download it from: ftp://stud.fbi.fh-darmstadt.de/pub/linux/isos/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-11-19-EN.iso It shouldn't take long on your 26Mbps connection :D *ENVY*

I have tested it and can only get up to about 65 mbps... But I guess thats fast enough... But back to the original topic... the laptop wont boot.... and I dont really want to change to linux as I dont know enough about it. The other PC`s are running Win XP Pro, and feel comfortable with it... |

2004-05-10 04:21:00 | That looks as if the disk has a bad spot making one of the system files unusable. A format should have picked that up. The fact that you managed to install Windows XP suggests that the memory is OK. Can you get into the Recovery Console?

2004-05-10 11:42:00 | How do you get into the recovery console? Is that as you load XP in the options? Is that what you mean? The Hard disk is only about 2 weeks old . Thanks so far Brian

2004-05-11 00:21:00 | Probably. I'm not a Windows expert. :D But I believe it has a "Repair" option which will replace any bad pieces of code. (Apart from the "bad pieces of code" which are supposed to be like that. :D ]:)). If the disk is 2 weeks old, isn't there a guarantee? Or some help from the vendor?

2004-05-11 05:58:00 | I have been through the repair option and it just failed again. That is why I reformatted it. After loading again, it goes into its first reboot and fails from there. My next option is taking the hard drive back to the shop for replacement.. This is also a challenge due to the language barrier... But I may take a japanese person with me to help. Thanks for the help so far. brian
