| 235609 | 2004-05-11 02:14:00 | When I setup my 2 XP Pro machines, I had exactly the same problem. I found the same thing with the Wizard - didn't like me setting it up manually and for the first time EVER found the MS help actually helpful!!! The one thing that I did that made mine work with file sharing was right clicking on the folder to share and then going to properties, and then sharing. I had to check the box for "Allow network users to change my files". Until I Did this, I could only see one of the computers shared folder...hope you get it going!! |

Don't use XP myself but, if you can't share without giving permission to allow file changes, that sounds like a huge security risk right there. What's so wrong with read only status that a network won't work with it? Cheers Murray P |

| 235612 | 2004-05-11 02:28:00 | >stay away from using NetBios or IPX etc for now i'm open to correction here but as far as i understand it netbios is what windows uses to work out the name of the pc its connecting to (eg show up in network neighbourhood/my network places). if you block it with a firewall or disable it then the other pc won't show up. you can run netbios over tcp/ip or ipx/spx (netbui has it built in). ipx/spx is old but for medium networks it works well. netbeui is the simplist but it isn't advailable in XP (by default) and can be a bit slow. however ipx is very easy to get running, no ip addys, firewalls or tcp problems to get in the way. there is a bit of a slowdown running 2 protocols but i find its barely noticeable. |

| 235613 | 2004-05-11 02:40:00 | Sorry Tweak'e - I stand corrected. I was tinking of the NetBEUI protocol that I don't think XP has now anyway (or something like that). After a quick Google, you are right in that NetBIOS is the way that TCP uses to share folders and printers. Oooops. J :D |
