235472 2004-05-13 11:35:00 AFAIK, not without abandoning the memory request. I think its too low level. Besides, the processor can't see the L1/L2 cache so it doesn't know how long the request will take.

For scheduling multiple processes/threads the CPU time is broken into slices where each process/thread is given the processor for a set amount of time (I think it uses a timer to trigger an interrupt to stop it). Then the processor state (registers) is copied out and the new process/thread is copied in and given some time.

Its been a while since I've had to know this kind of stuff so I might be wrong. Arstechnica has a lot of good articles.

235473 2004-05-13 12:28:00 So surely its losing performance for non-HT applications then because its swapping the contents of all the other registers and putting them somewhere else? Or does it magically have twice the number of registers somehow when you enable HT in the BIOS? Chilling_Silence (9)
235474 2004-05-13 19:40:00 technical stuff indeed...........my system, (P4 2.4Ghz 512Mb 800fsb), is HT enabled and all I know is it works better than most.......I work on a lot of different systems, many of them new computers which dont have HT enabled and I can say for sure that it appears that my system is usually better at multitasking than most others.......for example on many systems when the AV program is scannign much will slow down......even on new systems with good fast cpu's ........but on mine you hardly notice it at all and you can still do many other things at the same time...........generally unless you are running smoe really heavy stuff the cpu is hardly beign used anyway...... drcspy (146)

235476 2004-05-18 10:18:00 Thankyou all for the interesting input.

How can I enable & dissable HT so I can see if there is any advantage on my system? I am into DV and have a RAID array.

I have Win XP Home.

235477 2004-05-18 13:21:00 Presumably in the BIOS settings. If your motherboard has hidden settings like Gigabyte do, you can access them by doing Ctrl+F1 on the main bios window. kiki (762)
235478 2004-05-18 22:45:00 Yes I do have a Gigabyte motherboard, a GA-8KNXP with Dual Channel memory. Peter (676)
