235526 2004-05-10 08:40:00 I know I have a Trojan program operating on my computer, put there by undesirables who think it is OK to bully. I can't get rid of it, they are cleverer than me. I am wondering if the following problem is caused by them, because I have asked before and no-one suggests answer for it?
I have Windows ME.
I have a folder with 50000 WMF files, in My Documents/ My Pictures folder.
After I have viewed a few hundred of these files, I get catastrophic resource leaks for My system Resources and GDI resources. User Resources stay OK. (The values do not come back to normal after closing the programs).
These Resorce leaks happen whether I view with IrFanView or ACDsee, or in My Pictures screen saver, or just browsing the thumbnails in My Pictures.
It also happens with IrfanView and ACDSee, if I remove the 50000 folder from My Pictures folder and put it in My Documents, and view from there.
This problem does not appear to arise if I am viewing jpgs.
Can anyone help with this mystery, please?

235527 2004-05-10 09:30:00 Perhaps it is not a mystery after all.

These programs may well use Visual Basic to display the WMF files.

There is a known bug in VB (and goodness knows what else) that causes resource leaks when dealing with WMF files, sounds like you have found it.

What is the name of the Trojan and why can't you remove it with a trojan cleaner?

235529 2004-05-10 10:08:00 Thanks godfather. You have helped me find what is happening. Its a pity Microsoft haven't done something about it and put out a patch, or perhaps they are too lazy ssssss (2100)
235530 2004-05-11 09:18:00 I like to view clipart, and I am wondering if I reinstall Windows with the HP recovery disc without formatting, would that possibly cure the problem? ssssss (2100)
235531 2004-05-11 09:50:00 Why and how would that fix it?

As Microsoft say in the link given:

Currently, there is no known fix for this problem.

Which part of that suggests a reinstall would work I wonder?

235532 2004-05-11 10:29:00 I was just puzzled as to why I should be one of the unlucky enough people to strike this problem? I imagine most people have no problem. (Or am I wrong in that?) So I thought, mistakenly you say, that I should be able to get my system back to the norm. ssssss (2100)
235533 2004-05-11 12:42:00 As I read it, your system is the norm.
According to the info given by MS, this problem will strike anyone viewing a large number of WMF files..

I don't have the problem, but I don't have 50,000 WMF files to view either.

Perhaps the "norm" is defined as those not viewing "hundreds of WMF files"?

235534 2004-05-13 11:19:00 Hi - Yes but I get catastropic crashes after viewing only one or two hundred WMF files. This must surely be unusual, because there are lots of clipart CDs that have been sold over the last 7 years, and they wouldn't have had a market for them if normal PCs couldn't view them. ssssss (2100)
235535 2004-05-13 11:40:00 The problem is not with the clipart seemingly, but with Visual Basic in Windows.

Contrary to what you believe, its probably not that common for people to view hundreds of clipart images at one time, usually only a dozen or so until the one needed is found and inserted. Despite having 50,000 on a CD, several hundred is a lot!

Try using a third part application to view them.
Irfanview is free and reads .wmf files.
If it does not depend on VB, then it may be fine.
I don't know if it does or not, but it costs nothing to find out?
