235761 2004-05-11 08:27:00 Hi Team

My D-Link DSS-8 switch died unexpectedly last night, and after open heart surgery failed, I went out today and bought a new D-Link DES-1008D.

The new switch is working like a charm, but for some strange reason it is making a faint sizzling noise like bacon frying. Apart from making me feel hungry, it is also a minor concern because having shuffled through the innards of the dead unit for a while, I can't imagine what could be inside this one that could make any noise at all.

I don't want to take it apart just yet, so if anybody else has a DES-1008D could you get an ear near to it and see if it is sizzling please? The noise is not very loud but is enough to irritate when things go quiet.

Cheers

235763 2004-05-11 09:18:00 Does it smell like bacon if you scratch it Billy?

I know my switch can get pretty warm. Wouldn't have a little high speed fan in there would it??

It sounds like a magneto-restrictive effect like a ferrite bead vibrating on a wire link. A dab of glue would probably fix it but I don't want to crack the case just yet, not until somebody out there can tell me if theirs is totally silent (or not).

Cheers

You can't see the front panel lights either,
unless you get right down to them. It's a funny-looking
thing too, but it improved out of sight once I got Eeyore
back in place on top of it.

235765 2004-05-11 11:27:00 I've got a Linksys router that makes a sound like that (although I can't normally hear it with the PC going) and it appears to be a fault with the power coil, some resonance in the windings - a reasonably common fault in these routers. I think your glue idea is right on the money. Sb0h (3744)
235766 2004-05-12 02:00:00 A switchmode supply will often make a bit of noise, but it could be the very quiet hen which provides the eggs. Graham L (2)
