235744 2004-05-11 08:30:00 Hi and Welcome to PressF1 :)

I see your card reader uses USB. Does any other USB device (scanner, printer etc) cause this same problem?

When the computer restarts on you, was it at the point of plugging in the USB reader with Windows already running or was it at the point of putting in a memory card?

235745 2004-05-11 08:38:00 Hi Jen C
I have a printer/scanner attached to a USB port with no problems and the computer restarts as i plug in the card reader no matter which USB port I use and I am on to my third card reader. I have tried a Dick Smith one and it was the same.
Thanks

235746 2004-05-11 10:22:00 Since you have had problems with different USB card readers, you may have a IRQ conflict. Go Start > Run. Enter in devmgmt.msc - OK. In the Device Manager go to View > Resources by Connection. Click on the + beside "Interupt request (IRQ)". See whether the USB Controller shares the same IRQ number as any other device.

Someone else may have further suggestions.

235748 2004-05-12 02:16:00 Just a thought:

Because this makes cards look like removeable disks, perhaps it's the OS which "feels" the need to reconfigure itself.;-)

Why not leave the reader plugged in all the time? That should be no problem if it's on a desktop. Of course it would be a nuisance for a laptop.

I've got a PCMCIA adapter for CFs, and it behaves itself in WinME. My other adapter, on a serial port, works with no problem too.

But when I connect the card reader to the USB cable it restarts the computer over and over until I disconnect the card reader.

235750 2004-05-12 06:51:00 With the card reader unplugged, turn off auto restarting under XP.

Hopefully that will allow the PC to blue screen with an error message which may point you in a better direction.

Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery - Settings - System Failure - Untick "Automatically Restart"

235751 2004-05-12 07:13:00 In Win 95 you could set how many disc drives could be used. Have just connected my card reader and get Removeable disks (F:) to (I:). My D is the CD and E Iomega Zip. Is it possible that you have a setting in XP that only allows you to use drives A to D, ie no drive available for the card reader and it just keeps trying. Perhaps Godfather knows where the drive settings are in XP, mine is obviously limited up to I. FrankS (257)
235752 2004-05-13 06:45:00 Hi there
I couldnt login. Yes I tried turning off auto restart and came up with check disk space, Bios updates or this one which I am unsure about disable memory options such as shadowing or caching
Thanks
