236264 2004-05-13 08:40:00 Hi Team

I've been sorting a computer for a friend whose son cut loose on the Net and loaded it with so much spyware and associated garbage it was absolutely crawling. It is a 1.8 GHz celeron with 256MB ram so it should provide half reasonable performance.

I ran the most up to date version of Spybot 1.2 and it said "Congratulations, no problems" or words to that effect.

Then I ran the latest update of Adaware 6.181 which picked up 3 processes, 100 registry keys, 11 registry values, 68 files and 10 folders. That's 192 new objects that Spybot missed. So the question is, if Spybot isn't being updated at present, what's the point of having it, or worse, running it?

I remember the furore when Adaware fell behind with updates while V6.0 was being developed, but there is an eerie silence surrounding Spybot's failure to maintain an up to date set of definitions. Those who rely solely on Spybot are going to be in for a surprise when they finally get an update, and presumably that also applies to people using the current release candidate for the next version as the defs for that can't be any better.

I could be wrong, but consider this a "heads up" just in case.

Cheers

236265 2004-05-13 08:47:00 Spybot is onto version 1.3 now. ;-) Susan B (19)
236266 2004-05-13 08:49:00 Was spybot already installed?

I have come across quite a few instances where spybot appeared to be rendered ineffective by malicious software resident on the computer.

236267 2004-05-13 08:50:00 Woops, I forgot a link ( . majorgeeks . com/download2471 . html" target="_blank">www . majorgeeks . com) . :8}

I think the reason why they hadn't done any updates for a while was because they were busy working on this latest version . The Adaware people did that as well if I remember .

Personally I normally run Adaware first then Spybot to mop up the leftovers .

236268 2004-05-13 08:56:00 That's a relief, :) but are the defs any more up to date than V1.2? Development of the new engine is one thing, but they didn't keep up with the Spyware while they were doing that, or did they?

Reassuring words welcome because I don't like to have all my eggs in one basket!

Cheers

236269 2004-05-13 08:59:00 1 . 2 hasen't been updated since March but should still catch all but the latest exploits . Check Spybots settings (advanced mode) update it if necessary and try again .

Get 1 . 3 final release here ( . net-integration . net/index . php?showtopic=15071" target="_blank">forums . net-integration . net) from the two links supplied .

Been using RC1 . 3 with no problems . I ran it on a neighbours machine last weekend and walked out with a bottle of JD . Needless to say I needed a cleanout myself next morning :D

236270 2004-05-13 09:46:00 Spybot 1.3 found another twenty-three items, which begs the question, why didn't they post those updates for V1.2?

Never mind though, all's well that ends well.

Cheers

236273 2004-05-13 12:34:00 Ive been using the Beta's since 1.2.1 and its always picked up stuff that Ad-Aware hasnt!

Admittedly Ive never run it the other way around to see why Spybot misses that Ad-Aware picks up.
