236984 2004-05-16 11:56:00 Yep despite being a great free virus checker...
AVG seems to slowly compost...

Started getting this
message on startup ....
"The windows registry or system ini refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists...blah blah "
the files are
vnetsup.vxd
AVGCore.vxd
AVGFsh.vxd
Vdir.vxd
dfs.vxd

So I uninstall the thing but the nag screen continues...
wont reinstall either...
Just want shot of it ...
Is a regedit required?

thanks for any help :)

236985 2004-05-16 13:06:00 I would say that you had a virus because the two that show up on mine for AVG are avgcc32.exe & avgserv.exe mikebartnz (21)

No probably just win.ini or sytem.ini

236987 2004-05-16 22:07:00 I think that you could possibly have had a run-in with a trojan of some sort that could have sneaked past AVG and could very well still be on your computer .

The vnetsup . vxd, Vdir . vxd and dfs . vxd are to do with your network settings . If you are running Windows 98 follow the instructions on this page ( . stanford . edu/group/itss-crc/pubs/dialup/vnetsup . html" target="_blank">www . stanford . edu) and this page ( . winbookcorp . com/_technote/WBTA12000481 . htm" target="_blank">www . winbookcorp . com) as there are slight differences and it would pay to ensure that each step is followed .

After you have fixed that empty your temporary internet files, history, etc and download and run a trojan detector . The Cleaner (cleaner4 . exe) is my choice . Make sure you let it update itself before scanning .

The next step is to uninstall AVG either through the Start Menu>AVG>Uninstall or through Add/Remove Programs, download the latest version, update it and scan your hard drive .

If you happen to be running Win XP I would advise you to disable System Restore prior to running the trojan cleaner then re-enable it after your system is clean .

236990 2005-04-26 19:24:00 I just did a routine clean reinstall of Win98 on an associated latop . It was running perfectly until he took it home and installed a config utility for his USB wireless NIC .
He stopped the install when it asked for his OS disk, which was left here, and then rebooted the machine to errors such as "The windows registry or system ini refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists . . . "
Files mentioed are the same as listed here: vnetsetup, vredir, dfs . There was no virus on this machine, it has not seen the internet since reinstallation .

Everywhere I look on the net folks say reinstall . I dont see that being necessary . Any help would be appreciated .

SEE this site before using it www.auditmypc.com
It appears cleaner4 could be a virus carrier.
Several such warnings available to this effect

I think this will be a winner. As soon as I get a hold of the laptop again, I'll give it a go and let you know.

Thanks.
