2004-05-17 12:21:00 | I was thinking about installing Mozilla Firefox 0.8, but it's a Beta version and the disclaimer warns it may not be stable. Has anyone out there tried it? Opinions please.......

2004-05-17 14:37:00 | Cheers.....using it now, and it goes way faster on my poor old 28.8k dialup. I can't get boradband in the wop-wops you see......my next questions:: 1. Whats the difference between this Firefox thing, and the latest version of Mozilla? 2. How many codecs would I need for regular web surfing? I want to download them all at once. I already have the Macromedia plug-in, but I am prompted to install more, when visiting different sites......

Well, I was a bit hosed with the Flash plug in - all manner of animated trash ads appeared on the Herald pages, fair enough I suppose since they are paying the bills, but I found it too distracting, so Flash is out. The FlashGet plugin is rather handy, a big help with speeding up downloads, which is pretty handy if you are somewhat short of light-speed connections Cheers, R2 |

2004-05-17 21:04:00 | I can never get the flashget plugin working correctly, can you outline some steps R2x1? I use firefox all the time with java and flash plugin, and also the ad-block plugin which gets rid of some of the flash ads. New feature I found put the other day, you can use your middle mouse button (scrollwheel) and click on a link and it will open up in a new background tab. Much faster than right clicking, then 'open in new tab'. I also like it how the new tabs open in the background. With Opera they always bring the newly opened tab to the front and I find myself having to click back to the page I was previously reading all the time. Bookmarks are easy to work with and customise. Far more intuitive than Opera. Skins, can't say I've seen anything as good as the 'occi blue' one for opera yet. Importing your old settings and stuff can be a hassle when you reformat lots.

2004-05-17 22:06:00 | The difference between Mozilla and Firefox is that the latter is a cut-down version of Mozilla . Mozilla also includes a mail client, newsgroup reader, chat client (I think - it may be just Opera that has that) and one or two other extras . Firefox, as WTF said, is just the browser . If you have a use for the other components you would be better off using Mozilla . Personally, I like to use Eudora for my email and I don't use the other features so Firefox/Firebird was all I required prior to going back to my previous favourite browser, Opera . > New feature I found put the other day, you can use your middle mouse button (scrollwheel) and click on a link and it will open up in a new background tab . You can also hold down CTRL whilst clicking on links and they will open in a background tab . ;-) > With Opera they always bring the newly opened tab to the front and I find myself having to click back to the page I was previously reading all the time . Hold down Shift+CTRL and Opera does the same as the above . Or you could use the middle mouse click trick . There are other customisations that you can set up with Opera to get it to behave how you want . > Bookmarks are easy to work with and customise . Sorry, but I disagree with most of the above . :-) Currently using the Cocoa skin which is nice and light/minimalistic . Have customised my toolbars to maximise screen space . Bookmarks in the latest version of Opera - 7 . 5 - are way better than previously and highly customisable . Much better than Firebird . The keyboard shortcuts/mouse gestures in Opera are great timesavers if you take the time to learn them . Importing your settings can be a bit of a pain, I agree . However, if you take the time to learn where they are then it becomes easier . I am not knocking Firebird/Firefox - it is lovely and was my default browser for a long time and I highly recommend it but my current favourite is Opera once again . :-)
