237440 2004-05-19 01:42:00 Add S38=0 in Xtra Settings under the Advanced Tab Jim B (153)
237441 2004-05-19 01:45:00 That extra setting is to slow your modem connect speed. Jim B (153)

237443 2004-05-19 02:31:00 That is the whole point of this exercise, connecting at a slower speed can give faster downloads.
If you try to connect at a speed that your phone lines can't support your modem downtrains to compensate and downloads stall and can even cause it to disconnect.

A slower speed will give a more stable connection and and you might find sites will load faster as the modem is operating at a consistant speed and not continually adjusting itself to compensate for poor line quality.

237444 2004-05-19 02:47:00 It might be a choice between slow connections which work, or the infinitely slow non-connections you have at the moment . :D

I suggest, strongly, that you try without the 10m extension cord . Some of those aren't well made in the first place, and they can be damaged . They are meant for "telephone" use between about 300-3000 Hz .

The "56kbps" rate depends on everything in the line being "very good": it is being pushed through a line rated at 2400 baud . There is an immense amount of cleverness used to get about 25x the rate . I'd bet that the high frequencies might be down after 10m in a non-twisted pair, and the phase would be messed up too .

Your starting remark about the "guy that invented dialup" might have provoked a few of us to not respond very helpfully . The dial up protocols do work . They work well for millions of people . Your problem is with your computer, your software, your modem, "your" telephone line . ;-)
