| 237586 | 2004-05-18 22:02:00 | Since IE 6 was infected with a StartPage worm, I ran antivirus programs, CW Shredder, and Hijack This .... which finally got rid of the infection. Now IE starts up in Google, as I want it to, but it will not connect to the Net. It is as if Work Offline is activated but it is not; all I get is a blank page. So I plan to uninstall IE6 and then reinstall it. But what should be saved before I uninstall IE? The favorites folder, and what else? I want the auto-complete feature to still run (example: to get Press F1 I just start typing "pr" in the URL line and press F1 automatically comes up). While I am on this topic, I'll say that I prefer to use Netscape for a browser but have to use IE at times to update Windows (98) and the odd update that must have IE. I do prefer the tabbed pages that Netscape has, rather than IE having to open is separate windows. But Netscape's auto-complete URL feature is not as good as IE's (when I type "pr" not only do I get press F1 with IE6, but any other page that has been saved that begins with the letters "pr" - this is really useful for virus and hoax pages since I have a number of such web pages bookmarked and can choose the ones I want to browse)........Anyhow I am leading up to this question: What about Mozilla or Opera? Do they have tabbed windows and automatic URL completion like IE6 has? Thanks - Steve L |

Why not add sites such as PF1 to your Links Toolbar in IE or Personal Tool bar in NS and they are there in sight all the time ready to select. |

As mentioned by Jim, a repair is a good option. When you say IE "will not connect to the net" do you mean it's not instigating a dial-up connection? Thats easily fixed by Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> Always dial my default connection Or is the entire machine not getting any traffic at all (like can it get e-mail/chat programs etc) |

YES, I do use the Personal Tool bar in Netscape but it is filled up and the Autocomplete URL feature is what I like the best (actually it is not the URL itself that completes but the tagged name that I I saved the site as; e.g. the key word "virus" will bring up a variety of antivirus sites; yep, I know I can do this via bookmarks but Autocomplete is faster and easier for me). "WhiskeyFT" wrote: <<When you say IE "will not connect to the net" do you mean it's not instigating a dial-up connection? >> No. The dial up works fine, so the PC modem is connecting, and Pegasus Mail and Netscape, but IE will not connect - gives the page message "The page cannot be displayed." - but remember the Work OFFline is NOT activated. FireFox browser - thanks - I have not heard of this one - will investigate. But guys, all of the above is good to know but my first question concerns uninstalling and reinstalling IE6, any advice? What to save before uninstall? Thanks - Steve L |

Is sounds as if your spyware removal has deleted a file that is required for IE so it may require more than a reinstall of IE to get it working. One other thing you could check is Tools/Internet Options/Connections Click on settings for your connection Check that Proxy Server is not ticked Zone alarm does strange things at times, try changing all settings to low and check if websites load. |

| 237592 | 2004-05-19 02:53:00 | Hmm... in that case I'm tempted to point the finger at ZoneAlarm. It is known for forgetting it's settings, regardless of what it might display in the actual program. It worms it's way right into the TCP\IP Socket Layer so messes things up at a pretty base level. The below instructions completely reinstall TCP\IP for W98, they should fix anything fudged by ZoneAlarm. If you still want to use ZA you need to reinstall it after doing the following. Usual disclaimer, no responsibility yada yada yada: If you are still having the problem of being able to connect to the internet, but not being able to go anywhere or receive e-mail or other traffic, have your Windows CD handy and follow these instructions. They have to be done in this order and exactly as described, so be careful. 1. * Go to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Components or Windows Setup (dependent on version of windows). * Uncheck Communications. * Click Apply and then OK. * It will ask you to reboot. * DO NOT REBOOT. 2. * Open up the registry editor by going to Start --> Run --> regedit.exe --> Click OK * Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es. * At the bottom of that thread you will see a folder called Winsock2. * Right click on it and delete the folder. * Close the registry editor. 3. * Go back to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Components or Windows Setup (dependent on version of windows). * Double click on Communications (the word, not the tick box). * Put a tick in Dial up Networking. * Click OK --> Supply the Windows CD if prompted --> Click Apply --> and then click OK. * You will be prompted to reboot. * This time - REBOOT. |

| 237594 | 2004-05-19 03:30:00 | Susan, I do not use Outlook. Have been using Pegasus for years and like it heaps, especially the recent version. Jim - Cannot access tools - get an error message - so it seems IE is buggered. Looks like I will try a uninstall - reinstall, then do the Zone Alarm thingie if IE does not work. And will see what FireFox is like..... |
