237471 2004-05-18 09:25:00 Asterisk is a company that uses Linux and other Open Source software for its products. It is not a distribution that you can install. What is the specifications of the old computer? Basically any Linux distribution can be a server, but which one depends on your hardware limitations. Jen C (20)
237472 2004-05-18 09:30:00 Well i got a P100, 500mb HDD, 42mb Ram and a Xircom Credit Card Ethernet 10/100 ready. Its a toshiba Satellite Pro 421cdt. I dont really want to use it as a server, i just basicly want a thin terminal type linux. dwnz2003 (5250)
237473 2004-05-18 10:14:00 Loading a GNU/linux distro on old laptops can be quite difficult due to their often having unusual components with proprietry drivers. :( I don't know enough about Toshiba laptops to be able to suggest which "How To" would be of help. Check out linux on Laptops (www.linux-on-laptops.com) and see if you can find one that is close enough to your computer.

You also mention that you would like to run it as a thin terminal but I think you might find that you would need to have a linux server to enable this. Check out the Linux Terminal Server Project (http://www.ltsp.org) page for some details and insights :)

237475 2004-05-18 23:17:00 For some reason Yoper Linux comes to mind.... Chilling_Silence (9)
237476 2004-05-18 23:50:00 Yoper! Chill . Will it run on this:

>> P100, 500mb HDD, 42mb Ram and a Xircom Credit Card Ethernet 10/100 >> ready . Its a toshiba Satellite Pro 421cdt .

I thought Yoper was optimised for 686 comps and minimum would be Pentium Pro or P 11/Celeron?

237478 2004-05-19 01:32:00 I presume you mean one of these devices... www.ascent.co.nz

What an interesting device. Your pc will run Linux ok but a GUI will struggle. Better with something line a PII 233 with 128MB of ram.
Just can build a thin client though for Windows 2000 Terminal Server.

237479 2004-05-19 01:37:00 Actually Vector Linux might run on it (cheers Chill) with a GUI. Dolby Digital (160)
