237419 2004-05-18 03:21:00 Anyone know who the dude that invented dialup is so i cn rip him to shreds :D
I have been havin this problem for a while now...
anyway...
around 70% of the time i connect to the internet (dial up), it connects, but i cant visit any sites, log on to messenger, check my emails, or do anything else related to the internet... when i open a web page, it will show in the status bar
"site found. Waiting for reply..."
and stay on that for a while until it finnally shows up with the "page cannot be displayed" message.
then i doubleclick the connection icon in the system tray, to find that there is on average 2000 + bytes SENT and only 300 odd bytes recieved.... which slowly changes the more i try to visit a page, but the recieved amount stays at around half of the sent amount, so, say after trying to visit a page 50 times it might be at 18000 sent and 9000 recieved... i know this is abnormal cos the recieved is normally a lot more than the amount of sent data..............
soooo back to the point, anyone know how i can fix this?

237420 2004-05-18 03:40:00 Sounds like you may have a few unwanted visitors on your hard drive. Go to the forum's FAQ section and follow the instructions in the Spyware FAQ. The Maintenance FAQ may be of some help also.

Link to FAQs top right of this page. Note that the pages may take a little time to load.

237421 2004-05-18 03:51:00 Define "a while" 2 days, 2weeks, 2 years?

Version of Windows?

Have you virus scanned with an up to date scanner?

SpyBot? AdAware?

Of course the guy that invented dial-up is the guy allowing you to post your question here.

237422 2004-05-18 04:09:00 Well....
A while = closer to...hmmmm....bout 6 months
Windows XP pro
Scanned (regularly) with up to date norton
Both spybot AND adaware...nothing
As for the Dial up guy, i wouldnt have to post this message if it wasnt for him :p :D

237423 2004-05-18 04:50:00 The people who have worked on the protocols which allow dial-up connections did a good job. In fact, they have perfomed miracles.

They're not responsible for any wrong settings on your computer.;-)

If it connects, the dial-up guy has done his job, the rest is up to your computer and software guys.

What happens the other 30% of the time?

Your problems could be the fault of the keyboard guy, or the surfing guy, or the sofware installation guy, or the configuration guy, or even the telephone guy or the ISP guy,

but the dial-up guy seems to be in the clear.

Cheers

237425 2004-05-18 05:20:00 If you are in the bush with a laptop I am not surprised you are having trouble.

It sounds as if it is a combination of poor quality phone lines and a budget priced modem which is causing the download problems.

Try slowing your modem speed with extra settings to give a more stable connection.

237427 2004-05-18 05:26:00 A friend of mine had exactly the same problem.

I do know however that he found his answer on Experts Exchange, a forum where, if a question is asked, answers can be expected without replies that have little to do with the original question.
