237067 2004-05-17 06:26:00 This afternoon I received a bunch of text messages (from the same person) two hours after they were sent . My cellphone is on Telecom's 025 network which has really bad reception where I live . To send text messages I normally have to hold the phone out of the window (!) and it is impossible to talk on the thing indoors - it has to be used outside halfway down the driveway . :-(

I have noticed that text messages quite often take some time to be received - sometimes anything from 10 minutes up to half an hour some days, but today's two-hour delay was a concern because it was semi-urgent .

Is this problem likely to be caused by the bad reception here or is the 025 network often a bit slow? The phones here that are on the 027 network don't have this problem - their reception is perfect .

The strange thing about all this is that if I send a message there is normally little delay in receiving a reply but occasionally I have had to wait up to 10 minutes before a reply came through . I am thinking that it might be the bad reception because although I'm not totally sure if it actually makes any difference or not, if the phone is placed near the window the reply appears to come in faster .

Would like some thoughts from others on this before I ditch the 025 and upgrade to an 027 . :-)

237068 2004-05-17 06:33:00 I suggest you upgrade to 027 anyway, but chances are some people were text bombing or sending randy text messages by the thousands and it just took its time to get to you... Growly (6)
237069 2004-05-17 06:34:00 I heard a year or so ago that texting is still somewhat an imperfect technology and even with the best reception you can still get 1-2% of messages drop into a black hole never to be seen Greg S (201)
237070 2004-05-17 06:37:00 Yeah I've had a few black holes around my house. Then again, im on vodafone and the reception is dissapointing. Growly (6)
237071 2004-05-17 06:55:00 Well isn't Telecom trying to get as many people as possible onto 027 anyway?

I think their claim to have the greatest coverage is for the 027 network only; the 025 network probably has less coverage than Vodafone's network.

237072 2004-05-17 06:58:00 Well I'm not sure, considering the Vodafone network has dismall converage in my experience . . .

But then again, they probably took a few 025 repeaters down .

In the end you might as well get 027, the beneifts are huge . Not only are the benifts huge over 025, you'll sound cooler to your friends .

but im still not sure if coverage has anything to do with the 2 hour thing, messages get to aussie in a like 10 mins (in my experience)

Have found the exact opposite . I have had very few coverage probelms with Vodafone, have even called 111 from the middle of the Cook Strait clear as a bell .

025 runs on an independent network to 027 phones, thus there will some kind of text gateway to convert the messages between the two networks, just as there is with Vodafone .

There are often huge delays or complete disappearances of messages between 027 and Vodafone .

That's understood. However, i hope you know that if you were on one of the ferrys, they have a repeater on board.

When I went skiing, i didnt have reception for half of the week (down south).

Was on board the Lynx... did not expect them to have a repeater!? That could explain a little.

Though with a substantial amount of driving around the country I rarely go long without a signal.

237076 2004-05-17 07:59:00 Ok I'm curious.

Why did you have to ring 111 from the middle of Cooks Straight. If you dont mind me asking?
