237952 2004-05-20 12:33:00 Having problems with my sound device.
Generally speaking, I can't hear a thing.
Everything is connected properly ---- There are no problems with sound devices in device manager or dxdiag --- I'v updated the driver and done all the trouble shooting I can think of --- I'v done a system restore twice without luck --- I'v even tried another set of speakers, (without success).
I'm totally stuck --- Can any one help ?

237953 2004-05-20 13:04:00 What model of sound card do you have?

Has this card worked ok in the past with your speakers?

This may be a stupid question, but have you tried connecting headphones to the outlet socket, if you get sound through them you may need amplified speakers?

Ensure that the master volume and the wav volume is up in sound properties, and of course check that you have a tick in the boxes to enable output of these - also check that it isn't muted (some keyboards have a mute button, which has got me at times when I have bumped it)

237954 2004-05-20 13:35:00 sound card model as follows: C-Media, CMI8738/c3dx PCI audio device.
The card has worked fine in the past, ( up till today -- lol).
Tried headphones with out joy.
Master volume / wav volume is up and it's not muted.
(see why it's got me stumped)

237955 2004-05-21 00:32:00 It's the same card as I have, a DSE jobbie....

Check this link (www.dse.co.nz) and scroll down near the bottom of the page where there are drivers and a FAQ support PDF.

Do you also have on-board sound on your motherboard? If so, you may like to check in Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Audio tab, and check that the C Media card is showing as the default device.

Good luck

237956 2004-05-23 10:42:00 The C-Media card is showing as the default device.
Tried the link and installed an updated driver --- thanks.
I now have sound ... but:
Only in some programs
eg: Can get sounds out of windows media player but not a beep out of MS word.
Sound is good in some games too .... but not all.
Still stumped ... but atleast I know it's definatly not hardware.
Thanks again.
