| 237899 | 2004-05-20 08:13:00 | Hi I have a 2 computers networked together using 802.11b ad hoc configuration. Since my server computer (with the internet connection) is downstairs, I want to know how I can shut it down from the client computer so that I don't have to go down stairs and do it manually once I have finished with it. I have tried creating a short cut to shutdown.exe and then putting "-i" at the end of the target line. The method itself seems to work ..just not for me tho, because when I try to browse for a computer is say "directory service is currently unavailable" ...also I have downloaded a program which is designed to do this, but it says something about requiring an admin acess on the other computer to be able to shut it down. How do I get admin access?? Right now, I just share files and internet connections and thats it ... I do not have to create an account or anything... Anyway ..if u know how to do it plz let me know.... I apologize in advance for the grammartical and spelling mistakes I have in the post ...kinda just whipped it out really quickly .... Cheers! |

| 237901 | 2004-05-20 08:37:00 | You can use VNC which is like a remote control for your other PC. Go into it, and your desktop becomes the other PC's desktop. You can then control it as though you were in front of it. Free too. Read about it here (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/) | Pheonix (280) | ||

It just hangs. :-( What I would do in your situation is find a program that can shutdown your computer at either a pre-determined time or after a countdown and configure it via VNC from the computer you are using when required. |

| 237903 | 2004-05-20 09:04:00 | VNC works fine for me. The kids leave their computer on downstairs when they go to bed so I can update AVG, clean up anything needed etc. Then when finished I shut it down as normal, which disconnects AVG at the same time. I use Real VNC (http://www.realvnc.com/), and if I recall correctly, there are several versions of VNC available. Maybe that's the problem with your PC Susan? J :D |

If you visit the link I gave, scroll to the bottom of the page, second dotted remark (from the bottom) says ..Ultr@VNC server can work as a Service under all supported operating systems, allowing remote user Logon/Logoff as well as Remote Shutdown. | Pheonix (280) | ||

| 237906 | 2004-05-20 11:32:00 | oh..... Well I'd say use the built in remote console, but personally, I have never managed to get it to work between two XP Pro PCs. I use a free evaluation copy of Server 2003.... The most probable reason that is asking for / telling you that you dont have admin access is because you are on a different domain to it, and from what i know you don't have a domain controller to regulate accounts; hence your server has no way of knowing that your account is trustworthy enoug to shut it down. |
