237638 2004-05-19 00:32:00 Hey guys

Well I've finally managed to get Fedora going again after a previous install.

On the previous install I wasn't able to get mp3 support going despite the help of some F1'ers (Chill in particular)

See my original post here. (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

Since then I've deleted and re-installed Fedora (using GNOME) and everything went smoothly. When it came to the soundcard test I shuddered at clicking the "test" button knowing full well what happened the last time... to my surprise it worked fine and I was good to go. After searching Google I installed an mp3 support rpm and now I've got it working.... now I can spend more time on Linux (move over Windows you're about to get booted.. well maybe not just yet (hehehehehe :))

I have just one query though...
Is anyone running Fedora (or any Linux distro) with a Radeon 9600XT, I've read a few Linux forums and most users struggled to get the ATi rpm's running. If you've got it running please be so kind as to post your install here.

System specs:
Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz (running @ 2.6Ghz)
1024MB DDR 400 SDRAM
Gigabyte ATi Radeon 9600XT (128MB)
SB Live! 5.1 audio card
80GB Seagate Barracuda (spilt into 2 40GB partitions)
40GB Samsung Spinpoint
Realtek 10/100 Mbps LAN card

I"ve got Windows XP - Home running on the primary partition of the 80GB drive, the 2nd partitoin is mainly for storage & Linux Fedora is running on the 40GB drive.

That's about it I think...

cheers

237639 2004-05-19 00:51:00 That's great to hear :-)

You'll be pleased to know that now you have just installed Fedora Core 1 (As Murphy's Law states: ), Fedora Core 2 has been released ;-)

Lol

Ok so right now I'm updating everything from the Fedora site, I've got the latest kernel etc and i'm busy downloading and install all the other components.

Where can I get Fedora Core 2... Is there any point in replacing Fedora Core 1 with Fedora Core 2?

Any comments on the ATi Radeon 9600XT under Linux Fedora is it supprted under Fedora Core 2

cheers

237641 2004-05-19 03:18:00 "fedora" to Google will find the sites . But since what is available is Fedora Core 2 test 3, I'd suggest you leave it alone . :D It's being put out for those who "have to have" the latest, and don't mind hitting a few bugs .

Since you've got a working version of Linux, just enjoy it for a while, learning more about the system . I would guess that a popular video system will have its support sorted fairly quickly . Try "Radeon 9600XT Fedora" to Google .

BTW: I see that the "more>" option in Google leads to "Special Searches", then there's a "Linux" sopecificv search . It's at least as fast to use the "linux" keyword on a top level search . :D (3 mouse moves and clicks, versus 5 characters) . Isn't technical progress woberfull? :_|

I'm quite happy with Red Hat 9 . 0, now I've got the updated rh-config-network rpms installed . Maybe I'll try Fedora sometime . . . but I wouldn't bother with any "test" or "beta" versions .

237642 2004-05-19 03:28:00 p.s. : I've just had a quick look. Try here for Radeon and Linux (www.stanford.edu). Look at the bottom of the page to a link for more about Fedora. Graham L (2)

I was informed that Fedora Core 2 was finally released today???

Have I been misinformed?

237644 2004-05-19 03:41:00 The Google cache version of the fedora home site showed the test version . Perhaps that's a few days old .
\
But I'd still advise anyone who has only just got version 1 going to wait a while . It's a good idea to get it going properly --- like the video --- and generally learn how to use Linux .

It's possible to spend all your time installing new versions, and never ever getting a stable, working, computer . I am sure there will be revised packages and patches issued to Fedora Core 2 . Let the keen buggers discover the need for them . :D

The object is to use the computer .

The latest bestest most-featured OS has never been my priority . That's why I've got a a couple of computers with 2 . 0 . 9 kernel . They work .

237645 2004-05-19 03:47:00 Just further info to my post above...

Is it really all that neccessary to have the ATi drivers for the Radeon 9600XT... I mean is there any real benefit to using the drivers or will the one's which loaded with the install be sufficient. I mean it's not like I will be playing a lot of games on Fedora.

Are there any really benefits to install the ATi drivers for 9600XT?

cheers

237646 2004-05-19 03:49:00 If you're not likely going to be gaming then I wouldnt bother terribly much .

Vesa drivers will be fine until you start wanting 3D things to happen :-)

237647 2004-05-19 06:22:00 Fedora Core 2 has been released (http://fedora.redhat.com/)- the mirrors opened at 2am NZ time although NZ's own mirror has yet to be updated.

I currently have Fedora Core 2 ISO's for disk 2, disk, 3, disk 4, the rescuecd (this one is new?!), and 89% of disk 1 sitting on my hard drive at the moment :D - having a heap of trouble getting the remaining 11% (download manager kget is permanently stalled :_| and I might have to start this one from scratch again).

You can upgrade from Core 1 to Core 2 easily enough, but it is not recommended that you upgrade from a pre-Core 2 test release. Core 1 will do you fine for the moment, and you can upgrade to Core 2 later on without losing your settings and documents. :)

Sorry I cannot help you with your ATi drivers as I have a nVidia card.
