237668 2004-05-18 23:06:00 Hi .

Friend of mine stu unplugged and shifted his comp out of the way to do something then put it all back and plugged it all back in and since then the connection box comes up with "Modem not found . Modem already in use or disconnected . "

So we did the obvious and opened the case and made sure e'thing was properly seated but still no luck .

He has a Lucent WinModem internal card and is running Win98se .

Me being the local keen newbie I had a hunt around and in some places the system says the modem is connected to COM1 but another place it says modem is at COM 2, and I can't change them over . I'm sorry to be so vague as "where" on the system this was . But could this be an issue?

Also, I thought I was doing the right thing by uninstalling the driver for the modem and re-installing it but he hasn't got the disk with the driver . I had a look on the net for one but frankly it was all a bit confusing . There seemed to be alot of varieties and all I could think of one that works with Win98se .

All bit of a muddle .

I had a look in modem properties and in some diagnostic part it mentioned a "Code 15" . I had a look for "Lucent Winmodem code 15" but only got three incomprehensible pages . (One looked like machine code) .

I think I have to get a driver for it and re-install it but then we're only back to square one with the COM 1/COM 2 part and the "Code 15"

Any help would be much appreciatted . This is the most difficult thing I've had to deal with since I got whacked by CoolWebSearch .

Cheers . M (Peach of a day up here, still, cool, bright and sunny) :)

237669 2004-05-18 23:11:00 This code means the device's resources are conflicting with another device's resources.
A PCI WinModem would be expected to have a "virtual" Com port of Com 3 or Com 4.

The PC probably has "real" Com ports 1 and 2, hence the error.

Sounds like the driver has gone AWOL.

Are you saying the modem has absolutely no identification on it, not even a Telecom PTC code?

237670 2004-05-18 23:23:00 Hmmm. Well thanks for the reply but I don't know what a Telecom PTC code actually is.

Apart from the "code 15" info there's not much else to go except what comes in the connection box.
"Unable to identify modem"
"Unable to establish a connection"
"Modem is already in use or disconnected"

These messages all come up at various attempts.

If it's a matter of changing the port around how is this done? At one stage the "COM2" comes up highlighted with what looks like the cursor blinking at the end of it. after the "2", but can't edit it.

I'm doing all this from memory. Next time I'll take more comprehiensive notes. Promise. :8}

237671 2004-05-18 23:33:00 If you want to reload the correct driver you need to know the make and model of the modem .

"Lucent WinModem" is a generic description of the chipset used . Its not the make and model of the modem . Bit like describing a car type as "internal combustion petrol engine" as an example . Make and model is more helpful .

The make and model is usually determined by physically looking at the modem inside the case .

Stickers on the modem PC Board can give good clues .

The Telecom PTC code sticker can trace the code to the modem make and model as an example . The Telecom PTC code is usually on a sticket that says "Telecom Approved" and "PTC Code" . Its not rocket science

Enter the details here:
. telepermit . co . nz/ptcregM . html" target="_blank">www . telepermit . co . nz

Then using the make and model details, search Google for the driver .

Just for the record I am NOT the stu mark c is talking about in his post, just to save any confusion.

Except that Agere do supply a generic driver

237676 2004-05-20 08:17:00 We have identified the modem thanks and stu has gone home with the driver on a floppy . We'll see what happens next .

Thanks for the help so far .

237677 2004-05-23 21:52:00 Hi,

We identified the modem, a Genius GM56PCI-L and went to Driver Guide and and downloaded the driver onto a floppy and loaded it into stu's comp but we can't actually install it . We keep getting "Lucent Installation disk not found" .

We've been round the block ten times in the Help and Troubleshooting stuff and just can't get it going .

I've looked up "lucent modem installation disk" but aren't sure it's the right one .

All a muddle, any help would be much appreciatted . Stu says, of me-
" you're not much good but at least you're free" . :D

Just about ready to get someone who knows what they're doing . Never done this before and I find it really interesting but stu just wants his comp fixed . .

TIA :)
