238339 2004-05-21 22:19:00 I have just acquired new Compaq 5020 using Win XP Home and when i downloaded the new driver from Iomega my Floppy disk drive facility just disappeared. Is there a way in which" i can have my cake and eat it too"?
I need to have both drives available to me. Any thoughts please? Am i overlooking something basic here?

238340 2004-05-21 23:07:00 It it an external Zip drive? Either way it should have nothing to do with the floppy drive. Was it working before the new driver? XP has Zip drivers. PaulD (232)
238341 2004-05-22 04:05:00 Are you saying that the floppy disc icon disapeared from My Computer. What drive is the Zip drive listed as (not A I hope).

Is it USB or Paralal.

You may need to asign the Zip drive another drive letter or there may be an IRQ conflict. IIRC Zip drives are recognised as floppy drives within windows.

Check out, Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager and look for yellow exclamations next to the devices listed there. You should be able to change the drive letter in the properties of the Zip drive, if that's a problem.

Uninstalling hardware and software and reloading can help.

238342 2004-05-23 03:35:00 Thank you Paul. It is a parallel job and what surprises me is that XP does not detect it as new hardware. As soon as I load the downloaded driver from Iomega, the Floppy drive on "A" drive disappearsand I get the hated yellow Exclamation mark on Device Manager. The Icon for the Floppy is replaced by th Icon for Zip drive but not shown as "A" drive. granpa (2631)
238343 2004-05-23 04:18:00 If I remember correctly, when you set up an Iomega Zip drive it asks you to assign a drive letter.

You have to do everything in the exact order for it to work correctly. This is how mine worked; turn off the computer, connect hardware, turn on the computer, power up the zip drive, insert the Iomega Tools zip disc, insert install floppy and start the Setup programme (do they use a CD istead of a floppy, these days) follw the installation prompts. It should go through a drive detection routine and, when this is done, give you a choice of drive letter for windows to assign.

Even then the drive letters and icons can get muddled. You may need to untangle that in Device Manager by changing the assignment there (there may be an easier way in XP which, I have win2k)

Still no go? Try, BIOS, Port Settings (iomega-na-en.custhelp.com)

Ah ha. Just found this (iomega-na-en.custhelp.com) which may make the all the above redundent.

238344 2004-05-23 04:33:00 Which device get the yellow? I've only used a parallel Zip 250 that was detected OK by XP. My internal Zip100 co-exists with floppy also.
This was in an old usenet post

"What mode is your parallel port using? If it's using ECP mode, then
try changing it to EPP or some other mode that doesn't include ECP.
ECP mode sometimes causes problems, and it uses a DMA channel which
the floppy controller also uses; that increases the chances of a
resource conflict."

238347 2004-05-26 22:10:00 Hello Murray,
Thanks for your advice- The system is now 100% OK. For some unknown reason Xp had not recognised the new hardware and after my third or fourth attempt to load the new driver, xp suddenly discovered the Zip drive and allocated it a new drive letter., I appreciate your help. Thank you.

238348 2004-05-26 22:12:00 Hi Paul, Thank you for your help. The zip drive is going fine now. I tried 3 or 4 times to lead the new driver and finally on the last attempt, XP discovered the new hardware and assigned it a new drive letter. Thank you. granpa (2631)
