238215 2004-05-21 04:57:00 Hi fellow f1ers,

I have a AMD Athlon 2800 with 256mb of ram.

When I open a program such as ms word, it takes a couple of seconds to load. Its not that bad.

I wonder if another 256 or 512mb would speed up the loading of software, and reduce the loading time to (I wish a couple of nanoseconds) a fraction of a original time?

Thanks,
mister harbies (5607)
238216 2004-05-21 05:02:00 depends on what other programs you have open at the time (ie depends on how much ram you have free).

a nice speedy hardrive can really make a difference. however if you have the $$ an increase in ram would be worthwhile.

238217 2004-05-21 05:06:00 If your using an XP 2800 with only 256MB, then yes add more ram, you can never have too much ram :D.

Especially if your running XP, it needs at least 256MB, but things don’t start to hum until you get 512MB, and considering a 512MB stick will cost you as little as $125 (+GST), its well worth it :)

Take a look at www.pricespy.co.nz for RAM vendors and current prices.

I assume you mean Run > Msconfig > Startup Tab, and for that matter Ctrl+Alt+Del > Processes Tab & Performance Tab Give a better indication of system load :)

238222 2004-05-21 05:36:00 yes. I had 128mb ram with windows xp. Now I have 384mb. Doubling or tripling it does wonders. Performing things like defrag or spybot will only get you so far. So my answer is yes. Get more ram Megaman (344)

Ouch, I did that once...

ATM I'm running a Barton 2800 with 1024MB/333, just need a 74GB 10K RPM WD Raptor SATA HDD to compleate the picture :D

Duron 1100 with 128mb 100mhz sdram.

Goes like a pig.

Still, word opens in about 2 seconds.

Wouldnt dream of adding ram to her though.
