238295 2004-05-21 01:03:00 I am looking for a software utility that can be used on a server, and will keep track of internet usage for a dialup plan

The server is at a school, and I am thinking of converting over to ADSL from dialup - but need to know what the usage is before, so that we stay within the limits of the ADSL plan we eventually choose

It may have been asked before, I searched but found no threads that looked likely

thanks in advance

238296 2004-05-21 01:29:00 There are a couple of things you can do,

Because you’re a School you can get VERRY GOOD PRICES on MS software, they are slightly dearer than MS Charity Prices, but still pretty good.

If you want to go the MS you want to use MS ISA 2003 Server (Part of the MS SBS 2003 Premium Server Package).

Another option is StarOs, which is a Linux Based routing software, costs about $130 for the server version which is what you'd need, and it will do IP accounting (keep track of the MB used) as well as user authentication, i.e. when someone tries to view any webpage it will bring up a login box.

Have a look at www.star-os.com for detailed features.

I'm currently in the process of building a StarOS box to manage internet usage, user speeds, and authentication for about 200 users.

StarOs is designed primarily for WISP use (Wireless ISP), but also functions perfectly well on any network situation. In a school situation you probably would enable User authentication to control who has internet access, setup the transparent caching server to improve speeds, and use IP accounting to see who’s using what bandwidth, you can also use MAC authentication to designate individual PC’s as always having internet access (i.e. every other PC requires a login for internet, but the Library PC’s don’t, they are always authenticated with the hardware address of their network card).

You can build a StarOS box brand new including hardware (i.e. a server) for about $600-800

If you are interested in StarOS I can put you in touch with a StarOS reseller in NZ.

238298 2004-05-21 01:35:00 Also if you a Small School, JetSurf 10GB is an ideal plan, you get 10GB of bandwidth at 256K down, 128K up, and after you go over the 10GB limit you are rate limited to 64K, so you don’t have to worry about excess bandwidth charges.

Also if you find you are repeatedly going over the 10GB allotment then you can either get your server (like StarOS) to limit usage speeds of individual users, or you can implement a Multi Homing Broadband router which will load share between a maximum of four connections, then you simply add extra JetSurf Plan connections as you need them.

238299 2004-05-21 01:42:00 Getting back to the original question ;), contact your ISP about your usage, most ISP's will be able to look at their radius server logs and tell you how much usage you have used in the last month etc, some ISP's, (like Orcon I believe) will list your usage on your online account administration area.

238300 2004-05-21 13:09:00 Hi Liam

I asked Xtra if they could tell me the usage on a dialup plan - answer: NO ... don't know why, other ISP's can ?

YES, we are a small school - Xtra said that we were on a business line ... so NO capped 10Gb JetSurf - would be nice though

We have a lot of MS software, and running Win_2000_PRO, so any advice on where a "usage meter" for internet traffic would reside on the server would be helpful

cheers

Xtra do have logged how much traffic you use, they have radius logs of everything. It’s just that the CSR's don’t have the facility to look it up for you because their tech people haven’t implemented a system for displaying the usage, (where as some other ISP's have).

I'll have a look round for some sort of traffic counter, but nothing (other than ISA2000) springs to mind.

On another note; I have worked with many schools etc in the past, and it is possible to get JetSurf installed, there are ways to work the system, and yes its all kosher, you can get JetSurf installed, you just need to know how to go about it.

In fact I have just finished installing a SBS 2003 based network at an educational charity in Auckland, they have 3 Business Lines, and we got them hooked up with JetSurf 10GB last week. So yes it can be done.

Out of interest what school are you at? Where are you based?

Also if you want some help going about the Telecom process drop me an email, liam@farr.net.nz
