| 238225 | 2004-05-21 05:44:00 | I have 1024 megs and I don't even think of memory anymore. I remember when I had 8 megs in a 486 and installed win 95. I installed another 8 megs for $200 ,but it was worth it. Jack |

If so and you have a shortcut to Word on the Quicklaunch taskbar (or wherever), go to the shortcut's properties and in the Target field add the following: /prefetch:1 Your shortcut should then look something like this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD . EXE" /prefetch:1 Your path may differ . That may shave a second or two off the loading time . |

| 238230 | 2004-05-22 00:08:00 | Susan, I had a look at Page 90 of the May issue of PC WORLD re Win XP's Prefetch Folder, deleted all .pf files except a few that were frequently used, this initially slowed down loading until some of the prefetch files were recreated by XP then the download was faster. Checking found some of the prefetch files were smaller. Re Ram, finance permitting, would instal maximum that the motherboard can handle |

You'd need a heap of applications just for your OS to run. Not to mention a firewall, virus checker etc. Or is there something I have yet to learn? :D |

I am surprised that Metla can get away with just one in his startup list - I would have thought there would be a firewall in there as well . |

| 238234 | 2004-05-22 11:13:00 | Yeah? How about printers, task manager etc? I realise my earlier post was in error because the OS has to get going before anything can be run . BUT ONLY 1??? How do you do it Metla? Makes for a fast machine except you've got to open programs when you need them . Clearly it works for you . I'm learning more everyday Susan - even if GF, Metla, yourself demolish me on occasion :D |
