238237 2004-05-21 06:07:00 Today is my first day on the 256K/1 gig plan. I switched from the full speed home 500. Can't say I noticed any difference! A 6.4MB download came down at an avge speed of 71 KBytes/sec.

Don't they throttle the speed at all times??

Psssst. Don't shout your answer in case they hear!!

P.S. Their usage meter site shows the new plan name.

238238 2004-05-21 06:21:00 Strongly suggests that they have not changed the speed though. Shhh... godfather (25)

try this page, if its still less than around 200k then you aint got 256k plan

238240 2004-05-21 07:37:00 You do know that the plans change over at the end of your monthly billing cycle and not the day that you phone telecom up and ask to have it changed, so check with the Jetstream team to make sure it changed over.

Sometimes the wheels fall off at the exchange and you will get a full rate connection on a 128k or 256k plan, if that’s the case then enjoy it while it lasts.

238241 2004-05-22 04:14:00 Yes, I do know that. The new period started on the 21st. linw (53)
238242 2004-05-22 04:20:00 How about 376.8 K Bytes/sec on the 1 meg file!! The 256 K bits/sec connection should only give me about 25 K Bytes/sec. SShhhhhhhh.

Sounds a bit strange.

238243 2004-05-22 06:21:00 have you restarted your router / modem? ilikelinux (1418)

No that would be right, your confusing bits with bytes
heres what mine said: (i'm on 256k)
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 29.532 seconds
Size of file: 1000 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 276.3 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 33.9 (kilobytes/second)

238245 2004-05-22 10:00:00 Note: All connections are rates in Kilobits or Megabits, not kilobytes or megabytes (like downloads).

To convert Kilobits (or bits etc) to Kilobytes (or bytes etc), divide Kilobits by 8.

E.g. For a 256 Kilobits per second connection 256/8 = 32 Kilobytes per second, of course remember that every frame sent by your router has header information (like where its coming from and where its going to, plus checksums and a few other things), so the actual usable data you get out is slightly less, and hence the download speed indicator in IE etc will read at less than 32Kbps.

Oh, and in-case you don’t know, 1 Megabyte = 1024 Kilobytes & and 1 Kilobyte = 1024 Bytes etc etc.
