238574 2004-05-23 02:14:00 have a system that is causing me many headaches.......grrrrrr.....it works very well (98se) except for if you clik to open a word document. Then it freezes and gives the message 'system is dangerously low on resources do you want to close this application' (or words very similar)........this is NOT the 'low on memory' message.......system has 128Mb and plenty of hdd space.......and it ONLY freezes on word........it runs word2000SP1. Also I installed the resource meter and at any point just before it freezes it'll be showing about 87% free resources............I have done many things to try to cure this.......but all to no avail.....including : run 'repair' on word..... Uninstall then re-install word Repair 'over the top' install win98se regclean change ram fiddled wiht vcache and swapfile settings..... run scandisk checked for viruses checked for spyware I finally left the system running defrag......not sure if that'll help but i's never been defragged in the last three years lol

your suggestions will be most welcome thanks for your time :-)

238575 2004-05-23 02:21:00 Find and rename the normal.dot file to normal.old whilst Word is not running. Reopen Word and see if the problem has gone. :-) Susan B (19)
238576 2004-05-23 02:50:00 Thanks susan.b ......however I cant get back to that puter till tomorrow ...in the mean time I'm wondering wouldn't the 'repair' or subsequent removal and reinstall of word have done this ?......This word is part of the works package.. drcspy (146)
238577 2004-05-23 05:00:00 Because Word's settings are contained in the normal.dot file repairing or reinstalling Word does not recreate a new normal.dot file. Deleting that file fixes nearly all problems when other remedies fail. tommy (2826)
238578 2004-05-23 05:03:00 "normal.dot" is the default template for the creation of new documents.
It is created as a template the first time Word runs, it is not a file that is transferred or installed when Word is installed.

As its a data file that Word creates, it will not be recreated simply by installing Word again. Even uninstalling Word will not affect it. Imagine if you uninstalled or reinstalled Word and it deleted every Word document you had! Thats why programs should never delete data files when they are uninstalled or reinstalled.

When it gets corrupt (and this is very common, as its accessed each time a new document is made) it does not get recreated by a new installation of Word, as Word sees that a file of that name already exists.

The fact that a corrupt version usually causes mayhem is well known, but only be deleting or renaming it will Word create a nice new version.
