| 238833 | 2004-05-23 22:03:00 | Greetings, Im just wanting to know if/where/when/why I should be using Alt tags in my HTML pages? If so, how do I best use them? Ive never been completely sure on why you would want to use Alt Tags (For text-based browsing?)? What are the opinions of fellow PF1'ers? Cheers Chill. |

They're rather good if you have images turned off (quicker loading of pages), the alt tag will let you know what image would've been in that place. Will also come in handy with text based browsing (using something like lynx) I think, but I haven't done much text based browsing so I'm not totally sure. No doubt some text to speech programs will also have the ability to point out what the image was by reading the alt tag. In internet explorer it the alt tag will be used to create a small "tool tip" type flag when the cursor rolls over the image. The correct HTML for that is the title tag though. |

Think about it: a blind user can have a text-speech browser. Text-speech doesn't make very useful output from JPG files. ;-) |
