239076 2004-05-26 09:23:00 As for Miami Steve, you can get a 8x pioneer, single layer, dual format dvd writers under $200 these days. so i dont c how is the price of a single layer is as expensive as the dual layer ones. Blue_face (1148)
239077 2004-05-26 11:15:00 I recently bought a Pioneer DVD wirter (107d).
At the time of purchase I was told that very soon there will be firmware available that will allow this unit to write to Dual Layer DVD's. Have no idea what this means. If this is the case then dual layer dvd writers are available. I paid $223.
Sounds like I need to learn what firmware means if I want to do this but as I have just bought DVD-RW for $8 I am guessing that a dual layer dvd will not be cheap.

While I am here............What does dvd-rw and dvd+rw mean?

Are you old enough to remember the Video VHS versus Beta format?

The beta format for Video tapes was possibly better than VHS. Just a format???

Take Hard drives for example. Format using FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, Linux Ext etc.

At the moment you will get DVD Drives that are dual format and will Read/Write +/- formats. There is also DVD RAM which we won't go into right now.

Take CD players for example. Will your car stereo play an MP3? It's likely to play anything in CDA possibly, maybe, or not even.

You were conned .

There will be no firmware updates to allow the Pioneer writer to write to dual layer .

Lo .

239080 2004-05-26 22:47:00 Blue_Face, I was comparing the price of the Sony DRU700A with the single layer drive that it replaces, the DRU510A. Both drives have a RRP of $349. I have not looked at the price of other drives, but am quite prepared to believe that Sony's are at the top end of the price scale.

239081 2004-05-27 02:58:00 you really dont need a dual layed dvd burner too expensive and the blanks are not available or cheap.
dvd shrink will reduce the size to 4.5 gigs or you can span across 2 dvds if quality is important to you

239082 2004-05-27 03:01:00 Doesn't that only apply to people who are pirating commercial DVD's? ?:|

For a data backup, 8.5Gb over 4.7Gb is quite a substantial increase.

239083 2004-05-27 03:29:00 Some DVD's absolutely suck when compressed though, so that's outa the picture for certain things.

Personally I'd rather pay the extra for me to be lazy and only have to burn 2x Dual-Layered Disc's rather than 4x Single-Layered DVD's for my backups

This wasnt the selling point that prompted me to buy this unit .
I bought because: My CD writer died - I always wanted a DVD writer so instead of backing up to 4 or 5 cd's, I can do it to 1 and the salesperson at Smartpc (hamilton) was friendly and courteous and took the time to explain to me my options .

To be honest I dont really understand dual layer DVD and not really interested either - I need something that works with drag and drop - if it involves more than this then not interested .

I'm no good at cryptic crosswords either, I'm male so just spell it out - cd+rw & cd-rw are different right? Is the " - " used in different situations than the " + "?

239085 2004-05-27 05:28:00 Sam,

The different formats (in theory) have different strengths. The advice I have been given is that the + media are better suited to data storage (backups), while the - media are preferable for video.

On that basis, I use DVD+RW media for my backups and DVD-R media for video storage.

Just how accurate this advice is, I couldn't tell you, so I am open to other's opinions on the main format differences.

Cheers
