239043 2004-05-25 06:55:00 ps -

GF gave a good account of temperatures and CPU's and measurers recently - sorry cannot find the link. But rule of finger-upon-the thing isn't a good one - I can touch my kettle boiling away at 100C (I think that's boiling temp) and it doesn't over-excite my heat-buds.

Also, static from bare finger upon CPU heatsink may also cause weird and unhappy results, unless you're statically discharged

Ever heard of an i386? :D

Mm, maybe - but the thing still works (apart from every three hours)

as for the kettle, well mine i can touch, certainly but my CPU was nowhere near as hot as that... if it was it would have blown anyway....

an, no, my computer does not look like that...

Sorry, my first PC was a 486 and even it fell over with the fan bumped off it's mounting.

Didn't realise 386's ran Celerons! :D

239048 2004-05-25 07:35:00 Ah well - if it isn't a heat thing on the cpu, and it isn't a software issue, then suspect the PSU - which is also a common cause for strange shutdowns - apparently it's not uncommon. Motherboard and hardrive are also areas to suspect. U have a difficult task to discover it - always made easier if you have two similar machines that you can swap pieces with. Greg S (201)
239049 2004-05-25 08:51:00 My brother's PC rebooted after every few hours, though his PC didn't seize up on him though. He found out later that the PSU was the culprit. aNtzy (4070)
239050 2004-05-25 09:10:00 heatsink wise is not a problem. lots of those came out with passive heatsinks, tho i di suggest a good case fan ;-) even brand new P4 system (eg DELL) use pasive heatsinks and a case fan shroud.

if its crashing constantly at 3 hours then its more likely a software problem as hardware would be more random.

239051 2004-05-25 10:35:00 well, its not exactly 3 hours, maybe 2:54 - 3:13 or so, and it doesnt reboot, just freezes.

Also, i do have a case fan.

I would suspect windows myself, but im probaly wrong.

The keyboard buffer will only hold so many keystrokes (16 from memory) and then beeps when full.
